Description and Notes
The Independence Development Project was started in an effort to bring the Origin into line for useful war service. Initiated mainly to keep Star Fleet Command happy the Independence was never actually meant to see active service.
After the war it was decided that more combat capable vessel were required and a test-bed Independence-class was built, mainly due to the unique Metaphasic shielding used in its design, but it proved to be under-powered and under-crewed.
Until the design flaws, which remain because of the hasty conversion from a science vessel to a combat vessel, have been worked out all plans to construct more of the series have been put on hold.

    Author's Note
The Heavy classification is due mainly to the Metaphasic shielding. Atmospheric Capability is included because (in my opinion) travelling through a star could be very much like flying though an atmosphere. The Ramming Hull is included as a side effect of the ?over engineering? done by the developers, with additional hull reinforcement.
Visually the Independence appears exactly like the Origin, an arrow head. All faults/notes in design are a holdover from the Origin development project.

Its me the roving starship critic at it again...interesting idea but there's a few problems:

The big problem is the phaser arrays...how is Starfleet cramming 200 Type XII emitters into a space that held 80 Type X emitters? I suggest reverting the phasers back to their original specs....instead, I suggest adding two Type XII Pulse Phaser Arrays with 200 emitters firing forward. (108 SUs)....plenty of punch for a small ship and it saves SUs...also makes it more "realistic" Trek-wise.
You could upgrade the Type X arrays by adding ACB Jacketing.
Change the torp mix to add some non High-Yield torps; remember, you can only launch one HY torp at a time.
Maybe upgrade the impusle drive one or two levels.
Also add some Ablative Armor..enhance its survivability.
The best way to predict the future is to create it.

    1. I decided to stick with type twelve, but reducing their number back to original. The difference could easily be accounted for in the spare SU’s left over from the Origin.

    2. I have done this to the now Type XII arrays but I am not entirely sure it would be done.

    3. I had forgotten this. It has been corrected.

    4. I think I will stand with the impulse engines. With ‘Impulse Thrusters’ the maximum speed is already as high as it can go, so all it would give would be additional power and at this point I deliberately don’t want this problem addressed.

    5. Done, up to maximum SU’s.

Still think it needs cahnges please do not hesitate to post.

Ablative Hull Armour is 5 per SU, not 2. So you could actually have 450 on there, not the 180 you've written.

Should make this ship survive even longer.

Well here is the corrected Ablative version.

Sorry it took so long, but shortly after I last posted I lost my PC (and a hell of a lot of other stuff besides).

If there are any other recomendations or corrections please post them, starship engineering is a cooperative process.

    what a powerful ship for a size 5 . . . which is what . . . a little larger then a Saber?

If this thing could pack Peregrines, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
