    FORUM GAME - Episode 1 "Frontier's Edge"

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are not a player in this play-by-forum game, please do NOT post here. I am not currently accepting new players, however if that changes, I will post an edit note here to that effect.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

All of you are at the dedication ceremony for the newly built Starbase 619, constructed to aid in the Cardassian reconstruction effort. It's supposed to be a 'ceremony,' full of formality, speeches, and more diplomats than you can shake a security escort team at, but it's definitely a PARTY in the fullest sense of the word. The laughter and noise echo around the room as you enjoy yourselves, getting to know your fellow crewmembers.

Some of the delegates present seem to be less-than-thrilled at how this occasion is turning out. The Starfleet Command representative, Admiral Jacobs, seems displeased especially at the behavior of your commanding officer.

Your commanding officer, Commander Julath Kithana, seems to be enjoying herself immensely. She's definitely had one too many glasses of Saurian brandy. She staggers around the room, introducing herself when she can stay focused enough to say anything comprehensible. You've heard a lot about her: a rebel in every way, this Bajoran woman goes against everything you've ever heard about Bajorans... especially due to the fact that she is infamous for her open disdain of the Bajoran religion. It's also rumored that she is romantically involved with the chief Cardassian liason officer, but you suspect that may be stretching it a little.

This is a chance for you all to introduce yourself to your crewmates, relax, and meet the people you will be working with from now on. What are you all doing?
    -------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Okay, that's the introductory post! Remember, if you need to say anything out of character, mark it OOC as I am doing here, or if it's a big question, please e-mail me.

Lt. Solek is a young Vulcan male in his 30's. Durring the party he will quietly watch the events that transpire while sipping a fruit juice. His only comment on any emotional outbust-a raised eyebrow.

every so ofton, he will consult a PADD to make a few entries in the latest experiment he is performing.

Should anyone introduce themselves to him his reply is,
"Greetings, I am Lt. Solek. This stations new Science officer. I am pleased to make you aquintance."

Should anyone greet him in proper Vulcan fashion, he will respond in kind.

Prof. Selim Dilek is a Cardassian male in his late 30's, wearing civilian clothes. Although he seems cheered up by the playful atmosphere around him, it's rather clear he was not very comfortable nor in the mood to party to begin with.

He slowly sips his kanar while walking around the room, mostly talking to Cardassians. He doesn't avoid conversations, but may seems more stiff when non Cardassians are involved, and usually doesn't contribute much, unless some scientific subject is evoked.

He usually presents himself as "Selim Dilek, head of the Medical Department of this starbase".

Glen Gir Laran is also carrying a glass of kanar in his hand, staying mostly to the Cardassian "side" of the room. He watches the drunk captain with interest, but doesn't actiively seek out any of his "Federation counterparts" during the party.

Gir generally seems to be a bit of a brooder, although he seems to hide it well when engaged in conversation. To the casual observer, he seems, well, uncomfortable.

He will generally introduce himself as "Gir Laran, Engineering Department."

OOC: Glen is the Cardassian equivalent of lieutenant from the resource I use...erhershman, if you have a different list you want to use, let me know.

Gir steps over to the good doctor as he scans the crowd and finishes his third (fourth?) glass of kanar. "So, Doctor, what do you think of their little soiree'?" he asks.

Lt. Mort is enjoying himself at the party. He makes his rounds introducing himself. When shaking hands with him, the first thing you notice, aside from his blue skin and head ridge common to all Bolians, is his iron handshake. To be accurate, it's his titanium handshake. His right arm is supplemented by a titanium exoskeleton.

Lt. Mort is the friendly, ambitious, and enthusiastic Ops officer. When asked about his arm, he will explain that it was paralyzed in a starship explosion during the Dominion War. Also when prompted, Mort will eagerly chatter endlessly about his latest computer simulation, or the new computer core aboard the Starbase, and might even invite you to the nearest computer terminal for an exhaustive discussion of stellar cartography. And Mort hasn't even had any to drink tonight.

Noticing the Federation/Cardassian split in the room's atmosphere, Mort will attempt to bring the sides together by encouraging conversation. Being a Bolian, Mort is uncomfortable in all but the most functional teamwork.

OOC: Looks like we have a great narrator and a great group of players. I'm looking forward to gaming with you, this is going to be fun!

The watcher is Vulcan male of average height, with a strikingly angular face... moreso even than is usual for Vulcans. He is dressed in the simple white ceremonial robes of his order, tied with a white rope, and hide sandals. He stands in an unobtrusive corner upon first entering the gathering, identifying the social interactions taking place, categorizing the participants, and comparing them to the information given in his prepatory briefings.

The front of the robe is embroidered with flowing Vulcan calligraphy which identifies the wearer, to anyone who can read Vulcan script, as Soltar, a Vestai of the first rank (roughly equivelent to Lieutenant, JG) , in the V'Ket- Vulcan's remenant surface army... now a monastic order relegated to the role of ceremonial guards. They would also note the badge, unusual for a V'Ket warrior, identifying him as a diplomatic attache' assigned as a cultural liason.

He notes the nearby Bolian (Mort, Bolian, Starfleet, Lieutenant, Operations, wounded during the war.. Soltar's brain says to itself) and also observes how Mort seems to be sizing up the two sides of the room. Surmizing tha the Bolian is about to make use of his species' knack for social interaction, Soltar decides to lend his support. After all, his primary mission here is to gather data on Cardassian history and culture... and the impact of the War on that culture. He can hardly do that if the Cardassians and Federation keep to themselves this way.

Soltar glides up to Mort and addresses him: "Greetings, I am Soltar of Vulcan. Would you care to join me in making the aquaintence of our Cardassian colleagues?"

I will grant you that I lack experience as far as parties go, but it seems to me everyone is enjoying it... well, as far as one can enjoy oneself, that is", he adds, darkening a bit.
He seems to be lost in thoughts for a few seconds, then adds a bit more cheerfully : "I must think to have some medications against headaches ready for tomorrow. Some may need it", he says with a wink.

"Make sure you keep three doses handy for our intrepid Bajoran commander," Gir says mirthfully, nodding toward Julath. "Given her antics this evening, she'll need two for just the hangover, and one for the chewing she'll probably get from her Admiral Jacobs."

Glancing at his empty glass and back up at the approaching Bolian and Vulcan, the glen's smile fades slightly. "Blue flags on an intercept course, and I have the sudden need to refill my drink," he adds. "Do you want another kanar?"

    Mort

Mort acknowledges the Vulcan's suggestion with gusto, and begins to approach two of the Cardassians across the room, along the way asking Soltar about his diplomatic experience as well as his background as a Vulcan warrior...

If they both haven't moved away, Mort will introduce Soltar and himself and ask them about how they came to be stationed here, their background, and so on. That is, if they are willing to share.

Mort would also like to attract the attention of the Commander and get her involved, asking her about her background.

(Though he's already read about his crewmates in the mission briefing, he wants to get them talking).

If possible, Mort will also get Lt. Solek speaking to the others. When he has a chance, he will ask Solek what he knows about Stellar Cartography, which happens to be one of Mort's favorite topics (and his Academy science specialization). If allowed, he'll carry on for hours about the latest mappings of binary black holes in the Cardassian region of space.

When Mort invites her over, Julath moves to join him, the Vulcan, and the two Cardassians. She has a Cardassian of her own in tow, who's she's dragging around by the arm... although with her barely able to maintain conciousness, he seems to be doing most of the dragging. You recognize him as Legate Kuran, the chief Cardassian liason- the one Julath is supposed to be romantically involved with. From the sweet, daydreaming, drunken mumble she whispers in his ear, you can safely say that there may be more to their relationship then just rumor.

She staggers over to the group. "Greetingsh," she says happily, her speech very slurred. "I'm Commander Julath Kish-Kithana. Call me ma'am... not shir." Legate Kuran, behind her, gives her a gentle nudge. "Kithana... you've had a little too much to drink; let's" But she cuts him off, leaning on him, resting her head comfortably on his shoulder. "Thish is Arek," she says (introducing him by his first name), giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Shay hello, Arek."
Kuran flushes as red as a Cardassian can, and says to the group: "Would anyone care to assist me in... escorting... the commander to sickbay? A dose of thiryelvetamine is effective in sobering a drunk Bajoran." He tries to laugh, but he's still to embarassed by Julath's very open display of her affection for him to think straight.

Selim seems to quickly consider different options with a waxen grin on his face, then, after a brief greeting to the Commander, answers to Kuran : "If I may Legate... I could go to sickbay and bring back what's necessary, so the Commander could... keep enjoying the party. Excuse me Commander", he adds, edging away from the group, "I'll be back shortly".

OOC : Is it possible to find a sobering drug that is administrated orally instead of through an injection ?

I would assume so. I mean, there's probably people in the 24th century who are afraid of hyposprays

Soltar describes his brief tours on Terra and Andor as they approach the Cardassians:

"I served for two years at the Vulcan Embassy on Earth. I was in the middle of my second assignment, Andor, when I received instructions assigning me here. The other members of the Vulcan diplomatic party should arrive soon. I am quite junior and my actual diplomatic experience is limited. I am considered an expert and advisior in various cultures and their history.

"It is hoped that my insights into Terran and Andorian culture may assist the Cardassians in rediscovering their history. Both Terra and Andor, and Vulcan itself of course, were essentially violent cultures that managed thru various means to control and channel their combattive tendencies into more productive activity. As I'm sure you know, not that long ago Cardassia experienced a golden age of philosophy and scientific achievement. That was ended when the military took control of their society. Vulcan's goal is to revive that era. Combined with providing certain industrial technologies to allow Cardassia to make the most of her relatively poor natural resources it is hoped that her tendency for expansion will be curtailed."

"Vulcan naturally would prefer that Cardassia eventually return to it's pre-war economic and military strength. There is no benefit to the Federation, or to Vulcan, or to the Cardassians themselves for Cardassia to remain dependent on the assistance of other powers for economic aid and military protection. Far better for them to become trade partners and, eventually, regain enough military strength to defend themselves. Before that can be allowed to happen, Vulcan believes that some philosophical changes need to be made in the way Cardassians see the use of force as a tool of interstellar policy."

"That is the other reason for my presence. Many see Vulcan as a society of pacifists. That is not the case. Vulcans as individuals, and our society as a whole, realize that violence of any sort is rarely the best long-term solution to any problem. Indeed, a noted Human military philosopher has said that the only way to truely destroy an enemy is to make him your friend. However, as we have shown time and time again, even Vulcans will fight when there is no logical alternative. We hope to persuade the Cardassians that it is possible to be strong without aggression and philosophical without indecisiveness."

OOC: Clarification: is the station commander a Bajoran Starfleet officer, or a Bajoran Militia officer?

Gir, unable to escape before the Federation "delegation" arrived, listens with humor at the slurred words of the commander and the uncomfortable statements of her "escort."

"Ah, a shining example of the Federation and Starfleet," Gir quips with sarcasm. As Dr. Dilek excuses himself from the group, the engineer turns to the Vulcan and adds, "I heard the last part of your conversation as you arrived, Vestai Soltar, and I think that the Federation has much to learn from Cardassia about interstellar diplomacy.

"The misguided leaders of the last seven years aside, I feel that the use of force and the threat of that use is a very effective tool," he counters. "The Romulans are less likely to make territorial gains in the region because they know that a fight with the Federation-Klingon-Cardassian alliance would be too costly.

"It is that threat of our combined military might which keeps the Romulans at bay. Surely you cannot deny that."

OOC: Sorry if I overstepped there. The RP opportunity of Gir hearing the conversation as the Vulcan approached was too much to resist.
