Have you considered using a spatial anomaly akin to a black hole. (a subspace inversion, quantum pinch - play with the terminology), that collapses all matter in the vicinity, and creates a particle fountain, that generates Omega Molecules at reliable intervals. THAT would be something worth of controversy.

What are Omega particles, and why would they be controversial?

Watch VOY? Bah! I'll look elsewhere for my answer.

Omega particles: particles capable of producing limitless energy from tiny, tiny amounts of it if held stable.

But.... if the reaction goes out of control they destroy subsapce. That's right kids, no FTL anymore.

Thus: they are hyper classified (and banned): only Captains and above are allowed to know about them. Hence a cool intro to voyager where the ship shudders out of warp, and the computer shuts down all sensors to prevent the crew (except the Captain) from seeing what's out there.

Oh, and as an aside they represent the perfect particle... thus being the 'holy grail' for the borg. But that was the crappy 'mandatory 7 of 9 B plot' and is best ignored.

    Wink a few ideas

    Voyager bad!

But here's my sereis profile fora few ideas:

    Star Trek: Apogee

    Setting: Late 24th Century (2374-?)
Region: Alpha Quadrant, Romulan Border area, Pealides subsector, Class
    A2 Star System (Chiron)
Travelling: Starship, shuttles, transporters, ground vehicles, with
    the occasional sideral gateway.

Crew: Starfleet with allied civilian support.
    Missions: Defensive & diplomacy primary.
Composition: Multi-species (Human, Klingon, Andorian, Trill, Caitian,
Merkhut, Romulan) and multi profession (armed forces and civilian).

Base of Operations: Newly commisioned Deep Space Station Fifty,
informally known as "Mir" Station by local crews.

Era Technology: 24th century with access to advances in metallugry and
composite manufacturing data gleaned from an alien artifact.
Technology Available: Federation and Romlan primarily, plus whatever
else the local haulers can rum up.

Adversity: Hostile Environment (local solar system), Cardassians,
Dominion Forces, Romulans, privateers, and others by episode.
Crisis and Disaster: Interstellar War, Romulan & Federation Intrigue,
    and various by episode

Feel: Hard boiled, dark humour with hope thrown in liberally.

A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

    "The Big Thing::

A stable fissure opening into fluidic space. . . not only are Species 8472 invading but the physics of fluidic space dominate and become stronger as one gets closer to the fissure.

    Nope, sorry, Erzi's Toy...

Apparently all things Voyager are beneath their notice. We can't take the more interesting items from the series, whether it was poorly done or not, and tailor them to our own campaigns.

Easy Tiger... just cause no one has replied to it doesn't mean its bad. After all, Trek fans being as they are, if it had been bad there would be more likely a bunch of people slaming it as we speak.

Personally, I think species 8472 are a pretty big stick to use and require serious thought before using in a game - though in some truely epic games I would support their use.

And as far as voyager goes, I think that generally people can pick the good bits out. Assuming they've watched them. Would you suggest a GM who never saw 'Scorpion' or the other 8472 episodes to use them in a game?
