    Lotus Flower-class Neutronic Fuel Carrier

Okay, I've decided I'll play along and start posting ship designs. I thought I'd start with something simple, however, so I did a cargo vessel. This is an adaptation from FASA's old ST RPG of a ship that most of us should be reasonably familiar with: the Kobayashi Maru. There are some differences between this write-up and the version that appeared in the old FASA Star Trek III Sourcebook Update; most of these are based on actual data taken from The Wrath of Khan. Oh, how I love freeze-frame on DVD....

The differences between this and FASA's version include the dimensions (FASA had their version a bit to short and narrow). I also added a phaser for self-defense, but it's not much in the overall scheme of things.

It also has a passenger complement of 300 people, but I wasn't sure how best to represent that with the basic ship system in the NG. Once Starships is released, I will probably revisit this and some of the other ship designs I'm working on and tweak it a bit with the new systems in mind. In the meantime, just imagine some of the (truly monstrously extensive) cargo space listed here as being passenger quarters and amenities.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Kobayashi Maru.

    Lotus Flower-class Neutronic Fuel Carrier

    Production Data
    Origin: United Federation of Planets
Class and Type: Lotus Flower-class neutronic fuel carrier
    Year Launched: 2258

    Hull Data
    Structure: 30
    Size/Decks: 6/12 decks
    Length/Height/Beam: 237/70/111 meters
    Complement: 81

    Operational Data
    Transporters: 6 standard, 6 emergency, 6 cargo
    Cargo Units: 510
    Shuttlebay: Yes
    Shuttlecraft: 6 size worth
Tractor Beams: 1 FV, 2 AV
    Separation System: No
    Sensor System: Class 1 (B)
    Operations System: Class 2 (C)
    Life Support: Class 2 (C)

    Propulsion Data
Impulse System: Type IIa (.5c) (B)
Warp System: Type III (Warp 3/4/6) (B)

    Tactical Data
    Phaser Banks: Type III (x1/A)
    Penetration: 2/2/2/0/0
    Deflector Shield: Class 2a (B)
    Protection/Threshold: 13/2

    Miscellaneous Data
    Maneuver Modifers: +0 C, +2 H, +0 T

This class of ship is most notable for one of its number that doesn’t actually exist. Starfleet Academy’s infamous Kobayashi Maru command test scenario features a Lotus Flower-class ship trapped in the Klingon Neutral Zone after an attack by gravitic mines. While there is no actual Kobayashi Maru in the fleet, Starfleet traditionally maintains a listing for the ship in its database. It is registered out of Amber Tau Ceti IV under the command of shipmaster Kojiro Yance.

A question for Don: Without giving too much away before the book actually goes to print or anything, are there better provisions in Starships for designating some of the cargo room as passenger quarters, and things of that nature? I'd like to make a few civilian ships (passenger liners and that sort of thing), but the system is obviously designed for the more military approach taken by, well, navies.

I'm also curious about power plants for space stations.

    Thanks in advance!

Unless changes have been made that I'm not aware of neither of those two topics are touched upon. As with most things, it's a space limitation. (Much like building a starship.)

It's on my "wish list" for Starships Vol. 2 or maybe I'll pull a Steve Long and just write up all the rules that I didn't get a chance to include and provide them for free. I'd like to give Decipher a chance to use them in an official capacity first, however.

The Class III Tanker (Neutronic Fuel Carrier) is in the Starships book, BTW.

::le grand sigh:: I was rather afraid of that. Not at all surprised, mind you, but it is a disappointing revelation. Guess I'll have to work up an interim set of power plants on my own. The passenger space stuff is less critical to me at the moment, and I can always just say, "Some of that cargo space is for passengers."

I completely understand. If you should require test-reads of some of the material, please feel free to let me know.

And I can't imagine it looks anything at all like the Lotus Flower here, but I'll find some use for this ungainly beast.

    Thanks for the quick response.

    Nice writeup, PG.

510 CU? That's >12,000 cubic meters of space! Lots and lots of cargo...

Well, they have to put 300 passengers and 90,000 metric tons of neutronic fuel somewhere....

Thanks. That was one of the very first things I did when I got the NG, sort of a test run. Glad you like it.

    bump

Running this back up the flagpole so I can find it easily now that I'm doing the redesigns based on Starships.
