    need input, idee-ers, encouragement...

A chunk of intro (Series concept and pilot ep) and then my plea:

I’m workin’ up an immediate post-TOS-movies era game. Haven’t decided on exact year yet, but post-first-15-minutes-of-Generations. PCs are senior officers of the Enterprise 1701-B (Harriman got reassigned - something about knuckling under in a crisis…).

The Andorian captain is a highly-decorated, respected hero of encounters with threat species on the edge of Fed territory, sort of a war-hero, who decided to make a name for himself in a field other than killin’ folks – exploration! Looks to be fairly Kirk-like (player is pretty old-school, which is great by me!)

FO is a human, a demoted former Kirk-like starship captain whose luck ran out and/or f’ed up one day. Violated Prime Directive, got his ship destroyed, barely managed to save most of crew, stranded on a planet for a while, and kept them alive.

Vulcan Comm Officer – linguist, First Contact specialist, cryptographer. Highly suspicious of established threat species.

Gamma Triangulan Science officer, of The (former) People of Vaal (TOS “The Apple”). Fed. team came in and acclimated them. Uber-scientist nerd from a people who only a generation or two ago knew nothing of post stone-age technology or the universe beyond their forest. Super curious, outgoing.

Some as yet to be determined others, probably filling Tactical/Security, Engineering, Medical.

So…the series will be pretty basic – episodic exploration, first contacts, ferrying annoying diplomats, the usual. No big story arcs planned. Yer basic Star Trek action, philosophizin’, metaphors (I’m planning episodes on pre-emptive strike policies, total information awareness programs, “affluenza”, etc), etc. A mix of TOS/TOS-movie and TNG flavor and tone, leaning toward the TOS/TOS-movie side.

I need a good basic pilot episode, to intro the flavor and tone. It needs to have some of those great TOS clichés, and perhaps some good old Picard-like diplomatic challenges. I want it to involve the launching of the repaired E-B from earth or thereabouts, and their first flight into the great unknown. I’m thinking of a new species, lets call them the Akir, who stop the ship, either as the E-B enters Akir territory or as the E-B leaves the Sol system or something like that. Either the Akir don’t want them in their space, or the Akir are uber-powerful and don’t think the Fed/humans should be gallivanting about anymore. Of course, the crew will have to prove they are worthy or some crap like that.
My other angle is that the Akir are a society which (here comes the metaphor!) pretty much lives for distraction/entertainment, and plops the crew into an Akir version of a ‘reality show’ for the Akir to watch. Challenges, including some sort of combat arena set-piece, ensue. At best, crew escapes AND gets to lecture the Akir about voyeurism, using others purely for entertainment, and how there are other more rewarding things to do with one’s time, how the Akir have decayed as a culture, how humans once flirted with similar things but learned some hard and rewarding lessons, etc.

That’s pretty much as far as I have it. I’d like yer thoughts on any of this and any ideas you might have on how to implement/improve/expand/whatever thispilot idea. Maybe I just need encouragement. You see, I’ve never run a ST game before, despite a lifetime of being a fan and a player/GM…

First, excellent idea (let me guess...Harriman was reassigned on Tuesday ). But, please tell me there's a Sulu at the helm!

Maybe the exploration is somewhere past the Gorn Hegemony (that allows for the Gorn to get used, as well as the occasional Klingon story), and the crew discover the Akir.

I like the idea that the Akir are a recurring opponent....maybe they're wanting to expand into the same region the Enterprise is exploring, and don't like the idea of the Federation "jumping their claims." This will allow for a number of stories...and a nice arc to fall back on from time-to-time.

As for the "reality series" episode concept, it's an excellent idea, but I would use a one-shot race (if you plan to use the Akir as a recurring foe).

    teehee.

    Huh, I'd forgotten about that.
None of the players seems interested
in a Chief Helm Officer position, so why not!

Not a bad idea. I was thinking of them
    being "north/northwest" of the Romulans.
I want to use the Romulans, but want to
keep them scarce, so maybe down by the
Gorn is better. Actually, depending on what
major positions the remaining players pick,
I'd like to fill one of them with a Gorn NPC...

Actualy, I hadn't thought of the pilot
episode's new species as a recurring
one, sinc ethe reality tv angle was
pretty much a oone-shot thing, but it
might be nice to intro a new "threat"
right off the bat, as long as I can make
them unique and interesting and don't
    use them too much.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, ideas,
and time! I really appreciate it.

Sea Tyger is too modest to mention it , but he has done alot of nice work on the Gorn and posted it on these boards. I like the Gorn as a threat species. Not alot of canon info, so you can kind of do your own thing.
