I wish I were as certain about that as you seem to, yet I'm very doubtful. I don't like CODA because I think it's a major leap backwards from ICON, so I won't buy the books. That being the case, why would I frequent a board or a site that does not support ICON?

Yes, we can talk about all our good intentions, but let's be real and face the facts - if ICON is dropped from Trekrpg.net, then those who like only ICON, such as myself, probably won't hang around anymore. That's not a flame against this decision or anyone, just a statement of what I think will be the inescapable conclusion. Denying that this will happen is pointless. So, no, we're not being the shown the door, but it does feel like some of us are politely being handed our hats...

Uh-oh. Big brother. . .er, little brother. . .is watching.

Actually I kind of like the idea, not only of ICON material having its own home but of us having our own boards too. Nothing stopping us from stopping by here, or the CODA guys dropping in on ours.

Would be eaiser to sort out the stuff I ain't intersted in that way.

OK, you so some of you dislike. Nothing wrong with that; different strokes for different folks. However, as for dumping the ICON players I suggest you chill out and think about what you're saying.

There hasn't been any new ICON material added to the site in a LONG time. The existing material is being moved to an ICON specific site. The forum is a different entity entirely, and as I understand it ICON and FASA is not persona non grata here. You can discuss other systems to your heartys content and post ICON, CODA, homebrew or whatever here. There just won't be ICON material on the website.

People oughtta stop over-reacting. And frankly, given some of the incredibly rude comments I've seen over this announcement, my gut reaction is (and this is not aimed at anyone in particular) "don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out". My apologies though, to those of you who have been polite, and have valid concerns. That comment was most certainly not directed at you.

Well when you wake up and find that your email account size is critical and they were all from this thread, so I figured I needed people to know that I was paying attention.

I realise that this site costs Don money and it is entirely down to him how he runs it. I must admit it is not the way I would have run it, but that is only my opinion.

I can't say anything else nice, cos I am seeing red with fury now, so this may be a apt time to sign off.

At least you're not a FASA player, then you definitly would have to buy the new books..ha ha. But CODA is awesome

I must be missing the humor here but how does being a FASA player relate to having to go out and buy the new books?

Well, if this becomes a CODA only site then I will be heading for the door. I don't particularly like CODA Trek and since my LotRs game went sideways I now have no use for that line either.

I suppose this will be good news to some out there.

I'm truly sorry that you feel that way, Phantom, and particularly that you think that.

Of course, the same can be said for many folks here.

    Hmmm, interesting reactions.

I played FASA for a fair amount of time; I sorta expect that there will be little new material on the 'Net for it just because it is so long out of print. OTOH, I really liked the game (despite the APs -- I mess with every set of rules I have gotten since I started gaming back in the paleolithic era...) and wouldn't mind brushing them off and using them again.

As for ICON, well, I played it a bit, but I found it rather limiting -- moving from stats on a 1-100+ level to 1-6 rather bothered me. I never ran the game, so I am unsure how I would have changed matters, but as a player I felt ... constrained. One GM had everyone top out very quickly in their skills; the other had very, very rare advances. I'm not 100% sure who was using the "right" advancement rules, but there you go. BUT, and this is important, and I know it is sad to many people who have known and loved the game, ICON is no longer in print. This does not mean that you cannot continue to enjoy it (hey, I still have fun with Flashing Blades of all systems...), but it does mean that there will be fewer and fewer new resources. Why? Because the 'Net (like most modern culture) lives off the New, the Now, the Latest. Unlike the Romans, New = Good to the popular mind. Remember the fate of the WEG D6 system.

Whether that is a Good Thing or a Bad Thing I leave to indivduals to decide.

That being said, I sincerely doubt that no one will ever discuss FASA, ICON, or even GURPS Prime Directive (**shudder**) on these boards -- to do so would deny the heritage of Trek gaming. The games, like the books and other not-specifically-canon-material, have contributed to our individual visions of what Trek is all about.

So the ICON material is moivng to Owen's site. Good. It will continue to have a home. I know that I have garnered a lot of useful material here (altering it to fit system preferences of the moment). I will probably check in at the new site, probably not as often as I check in here, but often enough. For those of you who are thinking of permanentlyleaving this site, I will miss you. I mean that quite honestly and sincerely. I would wish that you would be able to find material here for your games just as I have been able to find material for mine in the ICON material.

Perhaps the middle ground can be reached.

    Yes, you are wrong.

There are changes coming. Change is inevitable. Icon content gets little press here now. Like it or not, Icon players are quickly becoming the minority and I can't focus the site around them anymore.

Owen is the largest Icon proponent out there and is going to host the content and expand the offerings.

Tell me, Icon fans, how is this a bad thing?

There's no eviction notice and no intent to squesh Icon discussion here. This was not a difficult decision: drop the Icon content or find a new home where it can grow and flourish?

Owen and I have discussed this at great length (over two months?) and this is what needs to be done to keep the existing content available for everyone and grow it even further. Aside from the creation of TrekRPGNet in '98, this is probably the best thing to happen for Icon fans.

Well, I'm going to deny it, even if it is pointless. (I love how people seem to presume to have all the facts and know exactly what I'm thinking or what my intensions are.)

If you leave, I'm sorry to hear that. You (and everyone else) are welcome to discuss how to Narrate Trek RPG games (regardless of systems), discuss Icon, or Trek in general. That isn't going to change.

If no one discusses or finds any value in Icon I fail to see how that is my responsibility; Icon discussion, forum activity, and page access (I have the stats) has dropped off significantly since the release of Coda.

Owen is going to host the content and expand the offerings. This is a great thing. In the meantime the discussion forums will be available for you to discuss Star Trek roleplaying with the largest grouping of like-minded players and Narrators.

    Thumbs up

I gotta give props to Don and his effort to make this Star Trek RPG online resource available for everyone -- regardless if the system is Icon, CODA, or any other rules systems -- for some time now. (Geez! Has it been over 5 years?)

I may lament the change, but change is inevitable, and probably for the best. By delegating the resources to the other web volunteers, it frees Don to focus on the current system, while the others can focus on the preferred rules systems. That would benefit the variety of Trek gamers.

I'm still a fan of Icon but that won't mean I'll stop coming here (even after having punished myself -- long story). I've been here since the launch of this website, and I won't stop.
    Anyhoo, just some random thoughts...
