[CODA] Frigates

In the Narrators Guide frigates are referred to as non-specific in terms of mission. I take that as meaning frigates can be built to perform any mission. Medical frigate, patrol frigate, research frigate, anywhere something between a runabout and a cruiser is needed. Does anyone have any designs for frigates from any era they would like to share? I've already posted my Perry class general purpose frigate elsewhere in this forum. I guess I'm looking for some of the specialized frigates, though anything would be useful. The only canon frigates I'm aware of is the New Orleans (which has several threads in this forum), the medical frigate from "All Good Things" in TNG ( which I don't recall seeing any stats on) and the Steamrunner class. Star Fleet has lots of cruisers. I think it needs more frigates.

Actually, Beverly Picard's ship (the Olympic-class) is a Medical Vessel, and not a frigate at all.

Well, from my experience, it seems that ST uses the USN system of vessel classification for the most part. That is size donates the type of vessel i.e. (from the smallest to largest) patrol boat, yatht (of which the USN had several during WWII for patrol puposes) , corvette, frigate, destroyer, cruiser, battlecruiser, battleship ((Carrier being originally a variant of cruisers . . . ie CV)).

However, in the RN system, primary mission donates vessel classification. I.e. Frigates being primarily ASW vessles, Destroyers being primarily AAW vessels . . . etc.

However, if one is using the USN system, any vessel within a certain size range could be considered a frigate, if combat oriented . . . otherwise they would be given an axilury classification . . . ie AP - Transport, AOE - Fast Supply Vessels, AGS - Exploration (as designated in WWII).

But then agian, thinking about it, in SW, past the size of Cruiser, they do switch to more of an RN system . . . ie. Explorers.
