    Klingon ships in ENT "Expanse"

Was those Klingon ships in the Enterprise episode, Expanse, the Raptor class?

I don't think so but I only watched it once so far and could easily be wrong.

They did call one of them a Bird-of-Prey at one point.

Smile More info on ENT Bird-of-Prey

She has at least 4 disruptor banks and light shields. It is a bird- of-prey design, but appears to be much more primitive. It never fires any kind of missile weapon, but they were trying to do called shots or specific targeting in order to take Archer alive. It does not appear that the wings retract for warp flight or change at all.

    Hope this helps!

    Klingon Traditions

Yeah, those were Birds of Prey, all right. I really like the retro-design they did on those, with the over-sized engines and some sort of hanging turret or whatever that was underneath. Very handsome.

What I thought was interesting was how the Bird-of-Prey was about the same size as the Enterprise in that one fly-over shot. This suggests either that it's larger than the movie-era BoP or that Enterprise (and her 83-member crew) is smaller than I thought. Or, it might indicate that I'm pedantic geek.

Anyway, loved those ships. Somebody here will stat them up for us, right?

We can rule out Raptor because the Raptor cannot cloak. So I would wager maybe a D5 cruiser?

    Lightbulb

Actually the D-5 looks a lot different (see the episode "Judgement"), I'd nail these things with the D-3/4 appelation until told otherwise.

I saw no indication that the ship could cloak. Other than it's ability to keep a covert eye on Enterprise, what makes you think it could cloak?

I would be sorely pissed if it turns out the Klingons had cloaking tech. Bad enough they gave it to the Romulans in this time period.

T'Pol or someone else on the bridge specifically says they are "Birds of Prey" early on when they appear.

    Cool

Perhaps a predecessor to the B'rel/K'vort classes. The klinongs are never ones to give up a solid design (continuity no withstanding). maybe it was the basic hull and they figured out jow to scale it down and up to get the two classes we're familiar with.
The underslung projectors were intersting. I'm trying to figure out if they are grapnell launchers like the NX-01 has or disruptors 1&2. ideas?

The term was a holdover from an early version of the movie script, where the Klingons supposedly had stolen the ship from the Romulans. This was dropped, but the name clung. There is no evidence anywhere on screen that the ship design was Romulan.

Based off remarks in Enterprise, I'm surmising that the term is actually a Vulcan term, as is "warbird," and Starfleet has adopted it for ships so identified by the Vulcans.

That's a neat explanation actually Owen. I hadn't considered that one.
