[B5] Comment on "In the Beginning"

Watched this movie with my wife and I last night. It was pretty good, though since I've only seen the first two seasons, some of it confused me.

Like who the heck was that other Vorlon??

A thought occurred to me while watching it. Maybe someone can offer comments?

The Minbari approach new races with gunports open, showing their hand in a 'peaceful' manner. The humans consider this an aggressive act, and all hell breaks loose when the firebrand captain goes Rambo.

My question is, the Minbari are considered one of the oldest space-faring races. Wouldn't something like this have happened in the past with another alien race taking offense at the open gun-ports?

    Some Help

The other Vorlon is a Season 4 character, named Kosh (no, really ). I won't get into the plotline as it would ruin some of the twists that happen after what you've seen.

As for other races being offended, most probably had already heard enough about the Minbari to not start anything. Stupid Humans A number of the races in the B5 universe had space flight capability a lot longer than Earth, and probably enough sense not to pick a fight with an older race. Besides the major reason for the war was the death of Ducat. Its pretty reasonable to assume that the Grey Council didn't travel that lightly escorted most of the time when outside of the core region of Minbari space.

Okay, I'm done rambling for now, please ask for more on this topic at a later time

    Love that stupid show

    Sheridan: "And you are?"

    Kosh: "Kosh."

Sheridan: "I know you are to replace Ambassador Kosh, but what is your name?"

Kosh: "Kosh. We are all Kosh."

Or something like that, it was one of my favourite scenes.

And yes Dukat had specified that the Grey Councils ship would make the trip with minimal escort.

The firebrand captian was actually said to be incompetent when it came to first encounter senerios. He was told not to take hostile actions against the Mimbari, and fired at what he saw as a hostile act. The Mimbari were used to dealing with people that knew their customs of showing thier weapons as a sign of peace. The Humans were not told, since the Narn did not think it nesseccary and the Centauri were not in the know. (Forget the exact order.)

There may have been actions like this in the past, but they had been forgotten in the heat of rage.

Ah, yes Kosh Vader as the crew called him.

G'kar simply offered the humans weapons during the war. The Narn weren't invovled at that point, as I recall. Ambassador Londo of the Centauri simply told the Human (I forget which) that they should not "wake the dragon" with their blundering around.

Do I count as obsessive yet?

    as an addendum:

book 4: Clarke's law also covers first contact, including the captain telling a senate committee that the Minbari fired first.

At the end of the book, he comes up aginst the shadows, goes "we're under attack, they fired first... I've said that before... ... (BOOM)

and getting anything useful out of the league of non-aligned worlkds is like pulling teeth...

It;'s amazing what you know, isn't it?

The Kosh we all know and are bamboozled by is Kosh Naranek.

The purple Kosh creepaziod was referred to a Kosh Ulkesh

    "You have no Pants".
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

    "They know. They know everything."

Every now and again they collect individuals to serve them from thousands of worlds.

I am actually a Centauri, a genocidal ruler of House Mollari fromn teh war with the Xon.

And good riddance to them. Do you know what the last Xon said when he died?

Best Sci fi show ever. I watched it religiously for 5 years.

I would recommend not watching the movies until after you finish watching the series (except the pilot "The Gathering"). Most of the movies were made after the show and the producers assumed everyone watched the series. Many of the surprises in the series are given away in the movies.

Also "In the Beginning" is not really a prequel. it is not meant to be watched first. The movies is about a character from the series telling a story AFTER the events in the series.

About the Minbari, they are the oldest of the young races, and the consider themselves superior spiritously, culturally, mentally, physically, and technologically. The have a very ethnocentric view of other races, i.e. our way is right, they should know what opening gun ports mean. we need to guide the poor lesser races. The don't admit it openly but it is there.

Could someone provide a list of the movies made? The ones I know about are In the Beginning and The Gathering, and one I think called The Legends of the Rangers or something...
