Post Reference Requested: Akira A Carrier?

Could someone site the source of the reference that states that the Akira-class is a carrier? Thanks much.

Look under Fed. Ships, and there you are.

Some reference in this article. Also, the designer of the Akira indicated that it was a carrier/battleship concept.

Thanks, I was not aware of Jaeger's comments on the Akira being a carrier; I thought it was a wholly made up fact. (The Generations/First Contact art book I have doesn't mention it).

Well, IMHO, the Akira is not a carrier so much as it has 'jeep' carrier capability. A true carrier would have around 70 to 100 size 1,2,3 ships and would be very much a mothership. The Akira is a true cruiser in her own right, with a lot of capacity for auxiliary craft. Check out the threads in Narrator and Spacedock on this subject.

I agree Commander; I think the use of the word "carrier" was throwing me off.

Well in naval terms of a carrier, if the Akira has 30 odd fighters then it be class as either an Light Carrier or a Escort Carrier depending on just how many craft it can disembark!

Sure- an escort or 'jeep' carrier. Of course, the Akira could be deployed without a single fighter and still be one hell of an impressive heavy cruiser!

    Cool

The reference article in Star Trek: The Magazine is the probably the best source on the Akira. There is quite a lot of data from the original designer: ILM's Alex Jaeger. This was one of the earlier STM's, number 2 or 3, I think.

At any rate, it is essentially from STM and the ST: Fact Files that both Steve and I got our information to make up the Akira stats for Spacedock SRM. For a good time (maybe) got to Spacedock and check out the Akira versus D'Deridex thread starting up.

I have long argued that the Akira class are Strike Carriers, not Fleet or Escort Carriers.
I you want to have a look at my arguements on this matter check the Spacedock Threads on the Foch class Carriers.

Strike Carrier isn't bad, especially considering the Akira's awesome cruiser capabilities. And speed.

    Lightbulb

This is my first posting to this message board . . . but maybe I may become a new regular. I'm a first time GMing, and my third RPG. However, I'm a Star Trek fan and wanted to start one, so here I am.

Anyways . . . back to the subject at hand. As far as the idea of the Akira class being a "jeep" carrier/Escort carrier (CVE (USNavy classification system))/Light Carrier (CVL)/"Strike" carrier are all valid ideas, and we all know the arguments why. I myself support the idea . . . and am starting off my campaign as it being so, for it can hold around "30-50 Starfleet attack fighters."

Now I don't know about you but I never knew that there were any canon Starfleet fighters, however there is the Peregrine Class which has been seen in an echelon formation in a couple large battle episodes of ST S9. Thus since the episodes are direct canon, I would consider those as being "Starfleet fighters." But at the same time we know that these fighters can be vessels in their own right (However, I wouldn't wanta be stuck on one of those for a long range transit with a dozen comrades).

However, as seen in most large battle episodes where Akiras have been stand alone heavy cruisers (CA). And suprisingly enough they have been destroyed so often in those episodes that they are nearly replacing the Miranda Class as my choice of "Red Shirt" starship class. And thus should be treated rightfully so.

Therefore, I would think of them, and use them in game as the way they have been depicted . . . however who says they don't build varients to classes . . . I mean look at the Excelsior. Therefore, the Heavy Cruiser varient would have the pod between the two catamran engineering sections hold extra Photon Torpedo/Quantum Torpedo launchers, or some type of special weapon ( as in ST:Armada (which can be considered Canon with little argument)); while the Escort Carrier Varient would house a Control Tower in that pod.

But has anyone thought that maybe it could be used like a Amphibious Assault Ships (LHD/LHA) like the current Wasp Class (USN)? For these vessels have the ability to take on aircraft, and have a hanger bay (A major requirment for having sustained airborne operations). Furthermore, they have the facilities to house upto a Battalion worth of Marines and the medical facilities to take on casualties that would be incurred due to amphibious operation.

So . . . what do you all think about this idea?

For the Akira Escort Carrier Variant has the Through-deck hanger bays and can easily be modified by using compressed living quarters (as seen on the Defiant Class) to hold upto (if not more than) two companies of Starfleet Marines (around 240 soldiers (using current Army Unit sizes)). And during prolonged combat as has occured during the Dominion war, these vessels would be needed in some significant number. Furthermore, using Danube class Runabouts or Venture class Scouts, it would be rather easy to transport the troops if there was some type of transport inhibiters in use on the surface (as would logically be the case most of the time) and provide air support which would be needed.

    Cool

    These are all interesting points.

The idea of there being several variants of Akira is a good one and I like it.

We'll know more about the Starfleet Attack Fighters when Steve Long's Dominion War Supplement gets published here (real soon!)

If you get a chance, look up the Akira's stats in the Starship Recognition Manual. You'll find that she's a pretty powerful ship in her own right- maybe one of the most powerful ships in Starfleet after the Sovereigns.

Some of the ideas you express about the capacity of fighters and the basis for carriers are right on. Check out some of the threads in Narrators and Space Dock.

See my other posting in the Narrator Board . . . I have more ideas on the Akira Class.

As far as the Akira being a vessel in her own right. I would completely agree . . . take the Promethues incident . . . a Akira (Unknown Name/Starfleet Registration) Class served as the flag of that Group (one step down from Squadron in Naval organizational patterns ( if I'm not mistaken )).

But look at its overall depiction within the multiple series . . . they have been destroyed as often as the Mirandas. Maybe this is due to the over-confidence that the Captains have who have just recieved command of these fine vessels. Furthermore, in Star Trek in General (especially with in the Federation) small vessel tactics haven't been taught in ages, rather they teach tactics more on the side of Large vessel tactics.

Thus these Captains, most coming from the Large vessel tactics school of thought, don't use their airwings effectivly. Therefore the airwings that they do have have often been used ineffectively, and the Cruiser used like a battering ram rather than a manuverable destroyer(DD) or "fast" Cruiser (C?); which they have the capability of doing (as seen in ST:Insurrection, and multiply ST: DS9 episodes).
