Is there nobody able or willing to answer my question?
Well, I'm not currently in the same location as my books, so I can't give you specifics. However, all the size ratings for the creatures/characters mentioned are lisated in Fell Beasts & Wondrous Magic.

Thak you all! But here in Austria there no such things like fell beast and woundrous magic. So with the size catagories i can do little for my group. I need the height in m. i donīt have to be correct but a good gues of these could help me very much.
Shelob > not in FB&WM, so no idea
Lurtz > Medium, same as normal Uruk-hai
Oliphant > Gigantic, 25-50 yards in size
Balrog > Mammoth, 5-10 yards in size
Cave Troll > Mammoth, as above
Watcher in the water > Huge, 10-25 yards in size (from The Fellowship of the Ring Sourcebook)
Uhm, not sure but I think someone should look at those figures. The Cave Troll in FotR wasn't more then 12 feet tall (certainly not 15-30 feet.) The Balrog iffy. Oliphant 75-150 feet?! You do know that is 7.5-15 stories, right? In TTT it didn't look bigger then, maybe, 40 feet tall.Originally posted by Jason Durall

Just MHO.
About Troll: The Cave Troll's head along was at least 5 feet; and he had a horrible slump, when he's standing up straight he'd easily be 15 feet.Originally posted by Phantom

About Oliphaunt: Grey as a mouse, big as, um, 8 houses?I guess it could be possible to have an 8-story high Oliphaunt, but I don't think so... he's a bit smaller than that. I think you are right in saying he's not in the right size category.
Not entirely "official" I know, but the MERP puts the
-Cave Trolls at 12' tall..."They have a Cave Troll."
-Forest Trolls at 9'
-Hill Trolls at 10'6"
-Snow Trolls at 9'
These are for the male of the species, females are slightly smaller.
The War Trolls (Olog-hai) are said to be "Cunning and organized-yet as big and strong as their lesser brethren..." Putting a War Troll at about 12' by my est.
I'm going to rewatch my FotR DVD and see how tall the Cave Troll was... I'd say Aragorn is approximately 6 feet tall, so the Cave Troll would have to be 2 and a half Aragorns tall to qualify for the size he's at.
But really, that's just the movie! It all boils down to personal preference I think, since Tolkien never really stated exactly how high they were... though he might have...![]()
The above size categories are "approximate physical size", not exact. The description of what this means indicates that it also takes into account mass, and that creatures which are "roundish" might have a size category greater than their height.Originally posted by Phantom

In other words, it is not a cut and dried measurement system.
Still. 7.5 (the min for the size category) stories, even taking the bulk of a creature like the Oliphant, is still HUGE...WAY too huge. Especially when it was described as being the size of a house.Originally posted by Jason Durall

Like many things in this world, it is a matter of opinion.
