I wish I could just let this go, but I'm way too much of a fan of the thru-deck carrier concept. There are three small doors at the front of the Akira's primary hull. If you use Owen Oulten's dimensions and layouts for the Peregrine class Starfleet Attack Fighter (rather than oversized one shown in Star Trek: The Magazine), those doors are more than sufficient for fighter launch operations.

Also, various episodes of Deep Space Nine thoroughly established the presence of fighter wings in Starfleet service. They just never showed those ships being transported by an Akira. That's the weak link for us carrier enthusiasts.

ATC, your takes on the Akira are just fine. Good tweaks.

So as to it's "shuttle" complement. Has anyone come up witha way to deal with the fact that it technically only has 21 spaces for shuttles? Steve's SRM list's that it carries 30-50 (fast attack craft) and any space left is for shuttles (100 size worth total).

I know some folks have had trouble with that fact, The galaxy class is a prome exampler I believe. It has 25 shuttles and 15 shuttlepods I believe wich comes out to like 64 size worth.

    So anyone have any thoughts?

This was addressed in an earlier thread this year (don't remember exactly when) quite adequately. Basically, the '21' figure is the ability of the shuttlebays to handle smallcraft at any one time. The starship can actually carry quite a few more than that. Think of it as the flightdeck space on a Nimitz class carrier as opposed to the hangar space below the flightdeck. You could also compare it to the difference between the standard complement of a ship and its emergency capability. An Akira can quite easily accomodate 30-40 shuttlecraft, but can only handle 21 space worth at any particular time.

As for the Starfleet Attack Fighter- I didn't invent the term, Phantom, but it won't go away either.

Getting away from the question of fighters for the moment, the Akira class actually has 7 (!) shuttle doors. There are the three small launch doors at the front, two big doors flanking one small one at the rear, and a shuttle bay located below and aft of the bridge big enough for a pod or two. You have to look at those plans closely and examine Alex Jaeger's Akira art as well. This art also shows the shuttlebay control room over the aft doors and the smaller control room over the bridge bay.
