After having watched it, I think I can say the whole third season is excellent (plus BOTBW part 2 ), with only a handful of boring episodes (I don't think I even saw a really bad episode in this season).

    Cause and Effect was interresting.
Best of Both Worlds 1&2 still take the cake however.

    Already mentioned:

    The Hunted

The Defector (my vote for episode with best dialog, perhaps in the entire series; just listen to Picard and Jarok arguing on the nature of defection)

    Yesterday's Enterprise

Best of Both Worlds (a given in my opinion)

    And then there's:

Parallels (7th season ed where Worf jumps quantum realities, "Sir, there are 256,000 Enterprises. . .)

Relics (despite, to coin a phrase, , clinky dialog).

    Darmok (yeah, me too!)

    Sins of the Father

Cause and Effect (See the Enterprise blow up five times!)

Oh, there are probably a few others too. . .

My list kind of echoes everyone else's:

Yesterday's Enterprise (how could you not like this one)
    The Defector
    Best of Both Worlds 1 & 2
    Parallels

And a few others that might not have been mentioned:
The Measure of a Man (well acted by the cast)
    Reunification ( SPOCK !!) 1 & 2
    Sins of the Father
    Redemption 1 & 2
The First Duty (hate Wesley, but it was a good story,Picard gave a good speech)
The Offspring-I hate to admit it but this one seriously choked me up the first couple of times I watched it.

Any of the Jellico (Ronny COx) episodes. MEasure of a Man was probably the best of the bunch; they could have done more with the "is a machine really life" issue throughout the series, but just sorta let it drop.
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Here's my list of "must haves" (some have already been mentioned, but I'm too lazy to go back through the thread and remove them all from the list! )

    Skin of Evil
    Conspiracy
    The Neutral Zone
    Loud as a Whisper
    The Measure of a Man
    Q Who
    The Emissary
    Who Watches the Watchers?
    The Defector
    Yesterday's Enterprise
    The Offspring
    Sins of the Father
    Sarek
    Transfigurations
    Best of Both Worlds I
    Best of Both Worlds II
    Suddenly Human
    Data's Day
    The Wounded
    The Drumhead
    Redemption I
    Redemption II
    Darmok
    Unification I
    Unification II
    Cause and Effect
    The Perfect Mate
    I, Borg
    The Inner Light
    Relics
    Chain of Command I
    Chain of Command II
    Face of the Enemy
    Tapestry
    Starship Mine
    The Chase
    Rightful Heir
    Descent I
    Descent II
    Dark Page
    Attached
    Parallels
    The Pegasus
    Lower Decks
    All Good Things

Starting off with a quote from Maurice Hurley, the writer of "Shades of Grey", I'll go into my "Must Avoid At All Costs" list (the only reason I have any of them is I'm getting the series sets - what can I say? I'm obsessive compulsive! )

Re: "Shades of Grey" - according to Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, even the script writer, Maurice Hurley, described his own work as "terrible; just terrible".

    Episodes to avoid...

    Code of Honour
    Justice
    The Royale
    Shades of Grey
    Aquiel

Hmm...being fair, there's not that many "for God's sake, don't watch it!" episodes. There's a lot more I'm not particularly fond of (Emergence, Genesis, When the Bough Breaks, etc), but they've either got interesting background stuff or some saving grace.

I do think the title of "Worst TNG Episode Ever" belongs to either "Justice" or "Code of Honour" - I'm not sure which...

I decided to go by season and restrict myself to ONE ep per season. You'll note that there are many political/military/'major races' themed eps but I also really like eps like 'The Most Toys'.

    S1: Conspiracy
S2: The Measure of a Man
    S3: The Defector
    S4: The Wounded
    S5: Redemption part2
    S6: Face of the Enemy
    S7: Preemptive Strike

as a side note... I really don't get why Yesterday's Enterprise and BOBW 1&2 are so revered; to me they are great episodes but as I said I don't understand their 'cult' status. Explanations?

Add the following to my list of good ones:
    Sarek
    Unification
    Dark Page

To answer Snake, I love Yesterday's Enterprise because I love all alternate universe and time travel episodes. I hate to admit it, but I also like YE because it is dark. I like the alternate uniforms.

Best of Both Worlds is not one of my real favorites. Its events don't stand out in my mind. I'm not much into the warfare type stuff. The Wrath of Khan is not one of my real favorites either.

    Hmmmmm.

    Well.

    Lets see now.

    Errrrrrrm.

Well Best of Both Worlds Pts 1 and 2 of course.

    But then there's Yesterdays Enterprise.

But what about Pre-emptive Strike (sets up nicely the Maquis).

Or you could say The Enemy and also The Defector.

You can't leave out Gambit Pts 1 and 2 either.

Then there's also All Good Things.

But what about The Pegasus I hear you cry.

    Or Relics.

Or Reunification Pts 1 and 2.

    Or The Drumhead.

    Oh the choices....

    Okaaaaaaay.

    If you insist: Yesterday's Enterprise.

    IMHO.
We have all your working biros and we're not afraid to use them.

    Change of Thought

I decided that unrealistic episodes like the Deevolution one and the Masaka one are good because they're entertaining, and that that really is what matters most. I still say they didn't happen, though. Maybe Data dreamed them.
