Description and Notes
Though adequate for most missions, the cruisers such as the Constitution and Miranda classes could be overwhelmed by a small squadron of small, fast, and manoeuvrable ships, and when USS Indomitable, Excelsior-class, fell to a wolf-packing attack by three birds of prey of the house of Tomagh, Starfleet realised it lacked small, manoeuvrable ships with good response capabilities. With this in mind, Starfleet R&D was given a directive to come up with a small frigate class of vessel using the latest in starship construction technologies. The result was the Okinawa class Frigate. Light, manoeuvrable, fast and able of good cruising speeds, the “flat Connie” is built to face the D-7, or operate in groups against larger ships, their speeds allow them to fill patrol and heavy courier duties.
One of its biggest selling points was its ability to be easily modified for different duties, depending on where it was stationed. One of the cheapest versions to build was used as an in system police patrol craft, defending intersystem spacelanes from pirates or small scale threat force incursions. The weaponry on the system patrol version was extremely limited with phasers only. This gave them a little more room, however, for shuttles and cargo space to impound suspicious materials from smugglers or any other criminals. Its light spaceframe and high impulse speeds allowed it to catch almost any other ships at sublight speed. The scientific systems onboard were quite limited, however, as would be expected of a frigate.
