    Rules for extreme temperatures

As we here in Germany have to endure a wave of heat, I thought about rules how extreme temperatures affect the characters in game.

When it's too hot (for the species in question) I thought about reducing Fitnes by 1 and Intellect (Logic) also by 1.
If it's really too hot a second point could be lost.

In an climate too cold I would reduce Coordination (Dexterity) by 1 and as second step also Fitness by 1.

Naturally you have to adjust the problematic temerature by species. A Vulkan wont be as easily affected by heat as humans and an Andorian would be happy in temperatures where humans are losing Coordination.

    Any comments?

I'm not quite sure if an attribute loss would be in order here. Personnally, I'd just increase the TN of some actions, or maybe impose a stamina test for the characters to stand up the heat (with a lower TN for Vulcans and Cardassians). After all, excessive heat can have the same effects as a wound IRL, so we could use the same type of penalty.

How hot are you in Germany ? Around here it's somethink like 35°C

After witnessing how dull most people (me included) get during extended periods of heat i always thought it has to be a decrease in attributes. Go around in the city and look for yourself...
As a player of the World of Darkness I thought about their system and tried to translate it into Icon, but as I have less experience with this system it could be too harsh.

We had around 37°C for the entire last week. And in the city it's even worse with all the asphalt.
Some others may laught about 37°C but here a temperature this high is very seldom and not for several days...

I don't have a copy of the books handy but in the Decipher core rules there are (a limited set of) rules covering this. All you do is roll fatigue rolls, with a target number depending on the temperature. So a character would suffer from Fatigue as he continued to work in the heat/cold - and build up negative modifiers as he continued. You can increase the frequency according to how cold it is - I.e the hotter it is the more likelly you are to become fatigued.

While it is just semantics really, you don't become less dextrous or stupider when you are too hot, you just become too tired to concentrate. Andorians get a modifier to Fatigue for cold environments, and you would use your susrvival (environment) skill if you had it for that environment.

Not sure how that works in ICON, but it could work more or less the same.
