Well I think that's the piont - no one really knows!

Basically it's arround the premise that several factors from the future (including the Federation) are fighting a war in the Ent time period. One of the factions basically created the Suliban as they are (shapechanging, feature changing, adaptive lungs etc) and gave them their advanced technology so that they could manipulate the present through them.

It's unknown who the factor is who did this to the suliban, or indeed who the factor is who prompted the Xindi to attack Earth at the end of Season 2 finale, but it appears that several future temporal agencies are working against each other. In the case of the enemies,, most likelly to undermine the Federation before it can begin, and in the case of the Federation, to prevent that.

There appear to be at least three factions.

One is represented by the mysterious dark figure (voice of James Hogan), some have dubbed "future guy". This faction gave the Suliban their advanced tech, in return for which they demand obediance. These people can send messages, but not matter, back through time.

Another faction was represented on the ship by "Crewman Daniels", a traveller from the future who was -- maybe -- murdered by the Suliban leader, Silik. These people can send matter back through time (Daniels made this trip). They are from a century or so farther down the time stream.

The third faction is the one who told the Xindi that humans would destroy their world in the 26th century, and gave them the technology to build the probe that carved up a big piece of Earth.

This third faction could be Daniels' people, although there's some question why they'd first help Earth, and then destroy it. It's probably NOT "future guy's" people, since they acted to prevent the Xindi from destroying Earth.

But who knows? It could be just two factions, or it could be a dozen. One hopes that the plot will be resolved in some manner before the series ends, since no one is *apparently* fighting such a "temporal cold war" during other eras of the Federation.

Right on the money, Redwood. There could be a fourth faction as well.Weren't the Tholians mentioned as being backed by one of the factions ?Apparently a faction that is not at all freindly with the Suliban or Future Guy's faction-they kicked the snot out of the Suliban in "Future Tense".
