    Cool Michigan gamers Needed!

I just received word that the organizers of the Motor City Comic Con would like to include LUG Trek to the list of games to be played at their convention. As a result, they are looking to see if there are any eager players of the game in the area (or who if not, who would still be interested in attending).

If you live in the Michigan area and are interested (or even if your just interested, check out their web site at www.motorcityconventions.com

    Hey Doug,

Thanks for posting this for me. I really do appreciate it. :-)

I just wanted to add one small thing:

We are really looking for one or two people who would be willing to run a few scenarios for us over the course of the weekend. If you're interested, or know of anybody who might be, please contact me directly. The website that Doug listed will provide you all the info you might want on the con, but it doesn't provide any information on getting yourself onto the gaming schedule. To do that, you'll have to E-mail me: timwezner@yahoo.com.

    Thanks a lot!

Any TrekRPG.net members coming to this Con?

I will be running three sessions for this Con: TOS-Era, Movie-Era and TNG-Era. Just checking as I would like to meet some of the other people on the boards here.

It would also be cool if someone from here were going to be there and we could do something with fully-loaded (i.e. Spacedock) ship combat in a tabletop setting. That would of course be separate from the sessions I am running.

    Cool Delta!

    In regards to playing:

I believe that you will need to sign up for the event, I'm not sure entirely how just yet although there is a link below for the convention website.

As far as characters, I know that I will provide characters for the scenario (balanced 150 point characters in senior staff positions is what I am thinking right now). I will also be providing some information that will be relevant to the adventure and the characters backgrounds (although players will be encouraged to create their own personalities for the characters, some of these background details may be relevant). Not everyone does it this way of course, so it is entirely appropriate to ask.

I have ran adventures at conventions before, and it is different from tabletop in my experience in that you have to be much better prepared and (paradoxically) be able and willing to be as flexible as possible. Preparation. Preparation. Preparation. I also generally playtest the adventures that I want to run at the convention with my local group (which I will have to scare up between now and then) and they are invariably very different in tone and outcome to the Convention group (but nevertheless reveal the flaws in the game and help establish roughly how long adventures will take).

In regards to the Convention itself:

The following information was sent to me by the organizer above (Tim Wezner) who might be able to make more information available to us here.

"Admission is $15 per day. For a weekend pass, it's $30 (pre-registers), and $35 at the door. To pre-register, just go to the Motor City website, and choose Ticket Info."

    The Motorcity Website is http://www.motorcityconventions.com/

Apparently there will be six Trek actors there: (the following is again quoted from Tim's email to me)

"This year, they've got six Star Trek guest stars lined up, from all four series; Walter Koenig, James Doohan, Marina Sirtis, J.G. Hertzler, Andy Robinson, and Robert Picardo.
Some people that haven't been in MI in years, some who haven't been in MI ever."

I will have the basic information (day/time/basic concept of the adventure ina sentence) that will allow people to register for the sessions sometime next week. I believe that is when Tim is going to be updating the site to include some of the events.

    Talking

Sounds good. I will keep an eye out for those game times next week.

I am surprised with the number of actors that will be attending the event. The convention is mainly comic book oriented, yet they have enough Star Trek actors scheduled to call it a Star Trek convention!

    Thanks,

    Delta

Hey, fly me out -- I'll run LUGTrek for the whole con.

Oh sure, Don. I'm sure you'd really like that, wouldn't you. :-) I'll charge your plane ticket to the con. They'd really appreciate that. ;-)

    ************

As for the questions I've seen about the con...

This year will be the first year to pre-register for the gaming events (we're slowly building up the gaming program). You'll be able to do so online if and when you pre-register to attend. That should be going on the website very soon. Since this is the first year to pre-register for gaming events, you'll still be able to do so at the con. However, first priority will be given to those who pre-register.

I am surprised with the number of actors that will be attending the event. The convention is mainly comic book oriented, yet they have enough Star Trek actors scheduled to call it a Star Trek convention!

Well, the convention used to be completely comic book oriented. However, in the past few years, they've expanded their horizons. They now have a room or two where they hold anime film festivals. Gaming, has been added to the mix. This year, our gaming schedule will include over 125 events in miniatures, rpgs, and card games.

And yes, sci fi is the other aspect they have grown into. Creation used to host the only Star Trek conventions in MI. However, since they've pulled back, Motor City has moved in, and has brought in some huge guest stars. John already listed this year's guests. Last October (the con is held twice a year) we had Ethan Philips. May of 2000 we had Robert O'Reilly, Robert Duncan McNeil, James Doohan, and Jonathan Frakes. October of '99 we had Garret Wang, and in May of '99 we had Jeri Ryan. That con was a treat. ;-) There are already a number of stars showing an interest in future cons, including Alice Krige, Wil Wheaton, Michael Dorn, and Avery Brooks. Motor City is Michigan's Star Trek convention.

And they're not just limited to Star Trek. We've had Star Wars guest stars, B5 (Claudia Christian and JMS are both signed for this con), Lost In Space, and more. Motor City has really extended themselves in every direction.

    ***************

Sorry to sound like a commercial there. It's just that despite the fact that I do this work for the con, I'm still a fanboy at heart. I love meeting the guest stars, getting autographs. Cons to me are exciting. And cons like Motor City where I get my sci fi, comic books, gaming, and everything rolled into one are really exciting. :-)

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

    Thanks,

    Tim Wezner

I would like to join in on the gaming, as a player that is. But this will be my first time playing the Star Trek rpg at a convention (my first time playing any rpg at a convention). What do I need to do? Do I need to sign up for the event, or do I just show up with a couple of characters?

Hey...if you write an adventure set after the original and movie series for a Captain Pavel Chekov, maybe you can get Walter Koenig to play him! <g>
