    Question Star Ship combat

okay...I'm being dense as duranium on this one, but I"m stiill not sure I'm doing starship combat right.

Okay: assume I've got a Negh'Vahr class that just wuss slappeda poor little jemhadar fighter with it's main disrupter (6/5/5/0) at point blank vs it's sheilds/threshold (14/1). assuming I get a roll of 6 past the sheilds and such....what happens
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

    Several things happen.

    - You subtract the threshold to the damage and apply that to the structure. In this case, 6-1 = 5 structural points. In that case, that means also a critical system is hit: you then roll which one, and apply the corresponding penalties on the damage track. Using ESO rules, you would also have to determine the crew casualties as a critical system is hit, roll which secondary system is hit, and if appliable, see if a hull breach happens.

    - The roll being a Superior Success, you lower the shield strength by 2 units, applying possible penalties on the shield strength track.

ouchy. Okay So from what I'm gathering here from re-reading the Red Book (NG), the over-roll to TN to hit goes against sheilds, and the Penetration goes against structure. Or am I wrong in thinking that?

    No you're right!

Careful however, when you say "over-roll", that's just the test result (NG Table 7.8, p114): you can reduce the strength by 1, 2 or 3.

thanks for the help. I was a bit confused when I ran my NX-era demo at the local con, but this clears lots of things up

Sorry, now I'm being dense. What're the "ESO Rules"? I think I've missed something vital...

    Oops! Don't worry, KW...found it.

I hadn't been following the thread, but I've just downloaded the stuff from your site. I haven't had a chance yet to go over it in detail, but man, it looks sensational!

    Well done!
