TA3009, and the party is a mostly-Elven scouting party of Rivendell. They work in concert with the Rangers on, around, and along the road from Bree to Imladris. Right now they are in Bree, and this coming Friday I am going to start them on the "House of Margil" adventure from the Narrator's screen which I have been fortunate enough to have found a way to seamlessly work into my current chronicle.
Right now all they have done is fight a troll, which, in the South Downs to close to Bree was very far from its "home" in the Trollshaws. They are trying to track down the reason for that mystery, as well as the identity of the person who gave the troll the whip-marks they found on its back!
A future scenario will have the characters being the escort of Arwen from Lorien back to Rivendell. I got that idea from re-reading the Timeline at the end of the Return of the King -- 3009 is the year in which Elrond sent for her.

Ooooh... whoever is brave enough to whip a Troll has got to be one big baddie! I bet your characters are sufficiently awed by the mere thought.

That is a really, really solid idea you've got there. In fact, it's basing chronicles off little things like that which you find in the appendices or on the timeline that seem to me the most fun to play! (i.e. Barahir's Ring ) It just seems so much more satisfying, to me personally, to play off events mentioned in the Third Age, and not play in the Fourth Age (although that Age still has a certain alluring quality to it!). I'm sure lots of people get their kicks out of the game in different ways, but playing chronicles around and in conjunction with events in canon is my path.

Umm ... yup!

I agree, but one thing about it that is turning the gears in my brain is whether or not to have Elladan and Elrohir accompany them. I've looked through the books to see if I can find any mention of Arwen's passage from Lorien to Rivendell, but I can't find anything other than the timeline. I can't imagine Elrond not sending them along, but on the same token I don't want NPCs outshining the heroes in their own chronicle. I will figure out something. lol
Another event in 3009 is that Gandalf and Aragorn begin their search for Gollum. Since "our heroes" are in the Bree area right now I may have them run into them. They will ask the PCs to keep an eye out for Gollum for them. Of couse, Gollum is nowhere near that part of the world at the time, but its just another bit of spice I can add into the game to let the players know that they can be a part of greater events.
About the blade-naming ability, an other possibility ( I don't know if it has been mentioned before) is to award reknown points to weapons as well, if the character acts really heroic with it.
(just like it is described in FB & WM, with Dain's Axe)
