Star Trek Character Builder v3.1 (Character Generator)

    Hi,

Unfortunately i couldn't find an outside site to post the program so i figured i'll post it here like last time. Again it is split into two files, setup (STCBv31.zip) and help (TREKHELP.zip). If you have the previous version, uninstall the previous version before installing the new one. Unzip STCBv31.zip and run the STCBv31.exe file and follow the installation instructions. Afterwards unzip TREKHELP.zip and place TREKHELP.hlp in the same directory as your program.

    What's new

Users can now add new species and professional packages to the program

"[custom]" has been added to the choices for personal packages. This option allows the user to select any skill and edges available

data editor accompanies the character generator to support the custom features

The following info concerns the data editor. I've decided on using a simple text file that is readable instead of xml which requires a bit of learning and not too readable or access database where some folks may not have MS Office (like me who has only MS Works :P).

    Adding Custom Data

This edition includes a feature where users can add a new species or professional package into their program. The Character Builder uses two text files, "aliens.txt" and "professions.txt". In each file, when you add a new data, each entry is encased within "<" and ">". This lets the program differentiate between different data in the files. Ex.

    <
    PACKAGE: Cannon Fodder
    PROFESSION: Soldier
    SKILL: Armed Combat (choose) +1
    SKILL: Craft:Carpentery +1
    SKILL: Demolitions +1

    SKILL: Vehicle Operation +2
    SKILL: Tactics +4
    EDGE: Defensive Attack
    EDGE: Famous Event
    EDGE: Rapid Healing
    >

As shown above each skill, edge, flaw, name, etc. is "tagged" with their prospective identification in caps followed by a colon. This lets the program know what kind of data that is being entered into the program. Also, for new data to be included, the data must be available before the program begins.

To create new data, start the data editor (For this example we will create a professional package, the same steps can be applied to species. Also note that you have to refer to page 98 in the Player's Guide for guidelines on building a professional package).

    1. Type in the name of this package. (Ex. Red Shirt)
    2. Select the profession for which this package belongs (Ex. Starship Security)
    3. Add some skills to the package and assign a level. You may also assign a speciality or have the user denote their own speciality. (Ex. Armed Combat, Computer Use (Programming), etc)
    4. Add edges (of flaws if creating a species) (Ex. Commendation, Fame)

N.B. In steps 3 and 4 you have the option to type in a new skill, flaw or edge in the combo box.

To delete any data, open the text file with your favorite text editor and highlight and delete (including the "<" and ">").

if you have any questions or concerns let me know.

Looks great, however I'm getting an error when I creating a human character. The program correctly prompts me choose a +2 reaction bonus when I try to apply changes in the conception process. However, when I pick a reaction and click OK it give me the following error

access violation at address 7FE8157F in module 'OLEAUT32.DLL'. Read of address CCCCCCC8.

Now this could be a problem with my system, but if you can offer any advice I'd be grateful

    hi

    Capt. Hunter,

Just to be sure, try uninstalling it (btw, did you happen to unistall the previous version?) and installing it again and then restart the computer. I did try it on my comptuer creating a human character and i don't get the error. See if it that may work, let me know if you still get that error and i'll see if i can make a fix for it.

OK, I've tried it on both my desktop and my laptop and I get the same error. Odd huh? I'll keep trying.

Just out of curiosity, I don't suppose you might do a pocket PC version?

Hey where are the tiers from the Starfleet Operations Manual?
    Hey my opinion

Without Star Trek: The Original Series there would be no other Trek Series or Movies regardless of shows rewriting the Series past.

it maybe a version conflict with the system file you have mentioned. If you can, can you email me with details. On the subject of making a Pocket PC version, I dont have plans in the near future. I'd probably be working on a LOTR version and some perpherial tools (planet or starship).

    A problem too

I have the same problem as capt. hunter.

    I'm building a mixed species character human-romulan

At the stage Professional Details a box pops up Unarmed Combat. It says you can either choose something available in the box or type some skill in. But than I get the same error mentioned above.

What am i supposed to do? And is it possible to save the character? because the program doens't allow my to get rid of the unarmed combat box...

    Beside that, it looks fantastic!

    Any thoughts?
Should i try deinstalling and a new installation?

Afraid I still get the same error.

However, I greatly appreciate the amount of work you're putting into this software. It's an invaluable tool, and I'd hate to have you think I'm ungrateful for it. Many thanks.

I wanted to say thx for your time and work too.

I downloaded the new version but get this error pop up

Accsess violation at address 770F1767 in module 'oleaut32.dll'.
    Read of address CCCCCCC8.

This time I was trying to build a Human. The error occured whhen the reactions box opened.

BTW I can't seem to run the Data editor. My program doesn't find
qtinf70.dll. Am I missing something obvious here?

If you find the time, send me on the right track, if not, I'm sorry having bothered you and taking up so much time .-)

    test program

i made some modificiations.. here's a test version. If you can let me know if it works this time around. I'm going to redo the data editor mainly because system file that goes with it is too big to include here.
