Why is it Britain insists on making such a big deal over the possability of a couple of inches of snow?

Yup - remember kids its all about traction. And no matter how big and powerful your car remember four tyres, on average, cover the same surface area of an A4 piece of paper.Originally posted by Liz Not Beth
Because if you're not used to it driving in the snow can be a danger. Ditto with preparing for below-zero temps.
Heck, even here we have problems when we get snow. Giant SUVs all over the bloody road. Really folks. The laws of physics don't care what you drive. 55MPH on 1" of ice and snow = disaster no mater how you slice it!![]()

That's why we use tires here. Better traction than tyres.![]()

It's still miles, feet (or yards) and inches.

Ahhhhhhhhh! You see the government does insist that everything official is described in metric (kilos instead of pounds and ounces and centimetres instead of inches and feet etc) but...Originally posted by Liz Not Beth
Really, we've sold product to a shop over there (in Liverpool!) that insisted that that we label everything metric!![]()
Because the British are intrinsically a bunch of stubborn traditionalists when ever we describe some form of measurement in conversation we always default back to Imperial. We're funny like that.
To prove how stubborn and traditional we are remember how anti-Euro we are and that we're one of the last countries in Europe to still have it's own form of currency.

I am actually shocked you guys don't get more snow over there in winter. Your far enough north I would have expected you to have a winter wonderland most of the winter.
How much snow do you get a year? (In inches please)

I find this amusing, Americans complaining about the Brits complaining about too much snow. Last I heard you guys (US) close highways when there's less then an inch of snow cover. When you have to drive in a foot of snow, during a blizzard with wind gusts of up to 75kph then come back and talk to me.![]()

Close the roads? Hell, most of the time they don't even close the schools unless we get a foot or more in a few hours. Michigan is not that far removed in climate from southern Ontario. Florida, Texas and Georgia shut down when they get an inch of snow, sure, but their climates are positively Mediterranean by comparison!

Depends on the region. New England, Midwest, Rockies, etc. all tend to get a lot of snow and it takes a lot to shut down roads there. On the other hand, places like the Carolinas, Georgia, etc. don't get a lot of snow and therefore lack experience driving in such weather, equipment, cleanup experience, etc. In such cases highways do get closed.Originally posted by Phantom
