Hmmmm...
Given that the Director's previous efforts have hardly been stellar (Event Horizon and Soldier) I'm unsure if AvP is actually gonna be any good.
I hope I'm wrong but my breath is not being held.

I wouldn't say Event Horizon was badly directed, it just tried too hard on the gross out scale. And Soldier...as you say wasn't all that great, but again I don't think it was all the director's fault, there really wasn't much to work with.
I for one will give it a go.
I liked Event Horizon; It was H.P. Lovecraft style SF. . . which is to say it was a horror film without typical supernatural elements.Originally posted by Phantom

Anyway, if the big money's behind the film, then the technical aspects are pretty much guaranteed. The only thing that could really sink it would be a poorly written script. And in the interview I read with Lance Henriksen (Bishop in the Alien films), the story sounds fairly solid.
Still, as with all Hollywood films, "It remains to be seen until its on the screen."

I didn't say I diliked Event Horizon, I thought it was a good horror flick.
Iloved event Horizon and enjoyed Soldier very very much.
Paul Anderson hasn't lost me yet, except for Resident Evil, I just couldn't get into that movie.
For an action movie Soldier was well within the lines. I just didn't like the "line up and march into the hail of bullets" combat scenes they used. Even future super-soldiers have to use cover. I very much liked the early training scenes (in a ruthless sort of way ). Very fascist, captured the mood perfectly. And the "eliminate" the enemy at all costs...ie shoot the hostage, was a nice touch as well.
I enjoyed the hell out of Soldier, not so much for the direction - which was competent - but for the whole idea of Todd's raison d'etre being eliminated and having to discover a whole new direction that his life was going to take if it was going to have any meaning. I thought Kurt Russell did a bang-up job with the role as well, excellently communicating Todd's alienation and utter unfamiliarity with intimacy. The build-up for the final scrap with Cain 609 was nicely handled as well.
Event Horizon was a no-go with me, largely because I felt they overdid it with the whole Gothic stylings of the ship, which blew the going-faster-than-light-takes-you-to-Hell gag way too early.
Resident Evil was a huge disappointment, which bears note only because Milla Jovovich is a Woman for Whom I Would Crawl Over Broken Glass on My Hands and Knees With a Rose Clutched Between My Teeth For.
Yet, if they'd done it any other way -- made the ship typical techno-metallic -- the horror elements would have been out of place and not worked at all. A horror film must build up slowly for it to be effective. Thus, the Gothic elements from the get go.Originally posted by D.S.McBride

We now return you to our regularly scheduled discussion of Aliens vs. Predator

I wonder if the film will deal with the theme (from one of the comics I think) that the Aliens were actually created by the Predators and it went wrong. The story goes that the Predators were bored with their usual prey so they decided to create their own....
Anyway -
Who's for a bet?
Predators to win: 5/1
Aliens to Win: 2/1
Humans (well Americans) to nuke the lot: All bets off.

I am going to the star trek convention in chicago in a few months. they are having movie previews that have not been seen by the public. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and the Alien vs. Predator movie. I really don't think I will see that movie because I don't know how in the heck they could tie the two together. I will watch the preview and let you guys know how it is.
