The Rothwell was an attempt to replace the older Locknar class starships with a somewhat more robust vessel while allowing interchangeable parts replacement and continuation of the normal duties of exploration and defense of the Federation.

The ships basic frame is little more than an excelsior-class primary hull and two SWJ designed warp nacelles mounted on top, angled away from the primary hull along long stupport struts.

As a design, the Rothwell met expectations, and more importantly for the time, was cheap to construct. As a result, 98 vessels of the class were constructed. While eventually replaced by more advanced vessels, it served it's purpose and no complaints about the design were ever put forward.

Why Rothwell class? I'm asking because Rothwell is small town a few miles from here and it seems funny to name a ship after it.

An LN-72 warp drive? Isn't that a little too far advanced for a 23rd Century design?

I might be wrong, but I think the LN-72 was introduced with the advent of the Excelsior Class. I might have made a mistake when reading Starships. And this is old warp scale...which is what the intermediary fleet was supposed to the Warp Ten Fleet anyway.
