    Vidiians

    Delving deep here. I had forgotton about this one;

    Vidiians
    By Dan Gurden and Brian K

    Affiliation; Vidiian Soldarity
    Homeworld; Unknown

    The dreadful phage, the bane of Vidiian existence, drove this once-proud Delta Quadrant race to the desperate measures so often called forth by desperate times. There's nothing so desperate as having your entire species ravaged by a debilitating, incurable disease for over two millennia, with thousands dying each day. Once a proud Delta Quadrant race of educators, artists, and explorers, the Vidiians' response to the phage propelled them to amazing accomplishments in medical technology, and they developed a species-wide ethic of postmortem organ donation. Corpses are not always easy to come by, however (especially when your entire society is dedicated to preserving your species' lifespan), so the Vidiians turned to harvesting organs from living members of other species, their ethics compromised by their desperate quest for life.

    Attributes;
    Fitness 3 [5] Vitality -1
    Coordination 2 [5]
    Intellect 3 [5] Logic +1
    Presence 2 [6] Empathy -1, Willpower +1
    Psi 0 [5]

    Skills;
    Athletics (choose Specialization) 1 (2)
    Artistic Expression (choose Specialization) 1 (2)
    Culture (Vidiian) 2 (3)
    History (Vidiian) 1 (2)
    Language Vidiian 2
    Science, Any (choose Specialization) 1 (2)
    World Knowledge (Vidiian Homeworld) 1 (2)
    Science, Life (choose Specialization) 2 (3)
    Or Science, Medical (choose Specialisation) 2 (3)

    Typical Advantages/Disadvantages;
    Fanatic (Oath); Cure the Phage - 3 (Fanatic), Medical Condion (Phage) -2*, Species Enemy (Most species dislike/distrust them) -5 High Pain Threshold +2, Rapid Healing +1

    Fantic (Oath); Cure the Phage

    This code is the primary species goal of the Vidians and the cause of their fall from grace. At first it was simply a driving goal of an advanced species turning to science to treat a disease rampaging out of control. As a result leading to the Vidians advancing their medical technologies by leaps and bounds. But the contstant failure of these advances to remedy the problem, caused this driving goal to allow the Vidians to 'justify' their action as neccesary when their attempts at treating the phage made them into monsters...

    The Phage

    The Phage is a slow debilitating disease, with no cure. If left untreated it will be fatal for the sufferer. However treatment helps to slow this process. Unfortunatly the Phage is highly adaptive and will develop a tolerance for any treatment used.

    This requires that Vidiians develop new and innovative means of staving off the disease. It was found that the transplant of healthy organs and body parts also helped slow the spread, but not stop the advance. Eventually the shortage of healthy body parts and organs led the Vidiians to apply transplants from other species, developing advanced medical techniques to ensure compatibility, usually requiring certain ammounts of Genetic resequencing. This resequencing had an unfortunate side effect, in ensuring the Phages compatibility to the transplanted parts, and their eventual debilitation to the disease.

    Over the years the sources of legitimate parts began to run dry, and it was simply a matter of time before desperation turned the Vidiians into more than desperate scientists and made them something more, something bad. By this point the extesive use of transplantation had already turned the species into a frankenstein mix of grafted skin and transplanted organs, becomming almost universally ugly by all species comparrisons, but now their attitudes towards other species became as ugly as their visage. At first they were choosy, carefully picking targets for potential in curing the Phage, and to keep their activities secret, but soon they were unable to keep their activities secret and hit targets indescriminatly either keeping their prisoners as slave workcrews until such a time as they could harvest the neccesary body parts, or simply hitting small groups to take a vital body part required urgently... The Phage had caused a once proud and peaceful species into a race of nightmare grave robbers...

    *Note: The Think Tank cured the Phage in 2375-76, this will allow the removal of 'Medical Condition; Phage' but it will still take a while for the Vidiians to loose their reputation as butchers and horrors...

    The Hirogen

    Hirogen
    By DanG
    Affiliation; None
    Homeworld; None (Nomadic)

    The Hirogen are a nomadic, spacefaring species first discovered in the Delta Quadrant by the Federation Starship USS Voyager, although it is known that their extensive travels and sphere of influence has extended deep into the Beta quadrant, near to the far side of Romulan space. The Hirogen social structure is organised around hunting packs, with each pack lead by an Alpha. Status within a pack is determined by prizes obtained during a hunt.
    Hirogen spaceships usually operate alone with crews ranging from 2 to 50 or more, although a particularly challenging and difficult enemy (or Prey) may warrant a lrger number of Hirogen ships working together. Their hunting routes have made them nomadic for so long that by the late 23rd century they no longer consider any planet 'home', living on their ships or on any planet they are able to settle.

    The Hirogen civilisation has been flourishing for over 10,000 years, the approximate age of a wide reaching network of communication satellites that allow Hirogen vessels to keep in contact over such a large area. Unfortunatly since that time such an emphasis has gone ito the hunt that scientific and cutltural advancement has slowed to a near standstill.

    Attributes;
    Fitness 3 [7] Vitality +1
    Coordination 3 [6] Reaction +1
    Intellect 2 [5]
    Presence 2 [5]
    Psi 0 [5]

    Skills;
    Athletics (climbing) 1 (2), (Running) (2)
    Culture (Hirogen) 2 (3)
    History (Hirogen) 1 (2)
    Language Hirogen 2
    Primitive Weapon (Hirogen Talon) 1 (2)
    Search 1
    Stealth (Stealthy Movement) 1 (2)
    Hunting (choose Specialisation) 1 (2)

    Typical Advantages/Disadvantages;
    Arrogant -1, Bloodlust -2 or Code of Honour (Hunters Code) -2, Obsessive Tendancies (The Hunt) -3, Resolute +3.

    Code of Honour: the Hunters Code.

    The Hirogen like to play fair with their hunt, even prefering a hunt where the prey has a slight chance of survival or retaliation. Often a Hirogen will continue a hunt in person using nothing but his wits and a portable scanner, rather than scanning a planet from orbit to determine the exact location of their prey and transporting to the site.

    Hirogen Talon;

    The Talon is a wickedly curved blade used by the Hirogen as a melee weapon of choice equally vicious and capable in combat as it is in the retreival of Trophies from prey at the conclusion of the hunt.

    Size; 50cm long
    Mass; 2.5kg
    Accuracy; 8
    Block; +1
    Damage; 4+2D6

    See Voyager Episodes;

    Hunters, Prey, Message in a Bottle, The Killing Game (Parts 1 & 2), Message in a Bottle and Flesh and Blood.

    I remember having stats for the Hirogen weapon worked up with someone in the very distant past, but it has been lost in the sands of time, along with the name of the co-author... All I remember was the the Hirogen projectile Weapon of choice was Gauss based...

    This is fantastic.........How I miss these posts. Ever considered doing a ICON version of the Aliens book as a netbook?

    Actually, that's got me thinking.....as I am a graphic designer and layout artist, I can take all this info and make it into a netbook. I do have Acrobat and Quark Express......It'll give me something to do.

    Well, as theres an ICON aliens book in the offing here... And you want something to do...

    How about an alternative.

    I am happy to submit some of my other rules which I have in various forms... This will offer several career templates, and background packages that I have created over the years...

    This includes Law Enforcement Officers, Several Ferengi Templates, TNG Starfleet Conn Specialist, along with the Federation Peace Corps and Starfleet Survival School...

    As recent posts have shown, there are other Career templates being generated...

    And I know that out there... Somewhere, someone has a copy of the 'Junior Explorers of the Federation' Scouts for Star Trek... That I would like to see again... Why not build a Character Generation Alternative support?

    I would be happy to submit stuff for that?

    I have to go out for the day shortly, but will either get to it this evening or tomorrow, depends on when I get back.

    In the meantime, I will open an alternate thread for it, and other related material, like Liquidator Queegs work above, so that we dont Hijack this Species thread too badly.

    Did the netbooks for this material ever go forward or did they kind of fade away as many have done in the past?

    Here are a bunch'o'races I have up on my Star Trek Universe site - many of them are from the old FASA Star Trek IV supplement, some are from other SF games (Traveller, Star Frontiers and Rifts: Phase World). Gotta love those Star Frontiers races, especially the Yazirians!

    Enjoy!

    *lol* Thanks Owen.

    I've actually been toying with the idea of pulling out Star Frontiers and running a game for kicks.

    ICON Species Database

    I had actually sat down this afternoon and began an edit of the ICON Species Database I am working on, intending to post the first four sheets today. However, real life intervened and I got little done past the preliminary checks of the math involved in creating a solar system.

    It is my intention to release a species or two a week rather than the entire document at once. I had some difficulty in releasing a large document previously and decided this was the best way to go. The primary release will be the cover page, index of species and the first species listed. Those species I have completed will be released one or two a week as I complete edits (and double check my math) in no specific order. I expect to have the first release by midweek, if not sooner.

    *grin* I am more then familiar with that good ol' real life getting in the way. *laugh*

    If it is a problem of size, why not send the entire document to Owen at Memory ICON to be put up there for download?

    CKV.
