    Andorian Defense Force Warships, 2204-2245

Prior to the Federation's grand exploration directive of the 2240s, many member worlds maintained their own navies, in addition to Starfleet. Andorians, specifically, viewed Starfleet as primarily as an exploration fleet, and ill-suited to the harsh realities of a war. (Part of this was colored by their still-dim opinion of Vulcans, whose influence made the Federation and Starfleet, in their opinion, "too soft.")

The Andorian Defense Fleet maintained five primary classes of warships to augment Starfleet's military capabilities. These vessels mainly operated within Andor's sphere of influence, but occasionally performed joint missions with the pink skins and their saucer-hulled vessels.

Note: I've only named one of the classes, as I'm about 500 feet away from my Among the Clans book. As soon as I get some time with it, I'll develop some class names for the ships.

    Notes
The General Shran-class dreadnought represents the last of the ADF's heavy warships. Originally launched in 2204, the two ships of the class (the Shran and the General Gheva) served as the defense force's flagships until their decomissioning in 2249.

At the time of its decommissioning, the Shran's offensive capability rivalled that of Starfleet's Constitution-class heavy cruiser, mounting two banks of massive PC-54/2 phase cannons and four ADF-designed Mk 10 IF photon torpedo launchers. The cutting-edge Mk 10 would become Starfleet's primary photon system in 2206.

The dreadnought's reinforced life support and operations systems provide increased protection for the ship's crew, and the protected warp system continues the long tradition of Andorian design that influences Starfleet designs later in the 23rd Century (and even finding a revival in the late 24th Century).

    Notes
One of the first ADF ships to take advantage of phaser technology, the Makra-class destroyer escort personifies the ferocity of its namesake. While not overpowering, the Makra is so agile that it can almost literally fly circles around its target, picking and choosing where it strikes.

Lone Makras generally operate on Andorian trade routes, protecting shipping from opportunist pirates. In fleet formations, however, two or three Makras will picket themselves around a destroyer or dreadnought, harassing all comers and allowing the larger ships to strike with near impunity.

The Makra served as the main fleet escort until the arrival of the Ashachak-class strike ship in 2240, when it was relegated to its shipping escort duties. The class was retired in the early 2260s.

    Notes
The Itlinal Flan'hris (literally "Brilliant Lance") was first deployed in 2226, in response to Klingon incursions into Federation space. A quick warship with excellent stand off capability, the fast frigate quickly became a favorite of her crews for her pure speed and maneuverability. It wasn't long before the Itlinal Flan'hris became the workhorse of the defense force.

The frigate is often paired with a Kal'hris-class destroyer, which specializes in close combat. In fleet actions, this tandem is generally surrounded by two or three Makras for support.

The Itlinal Flan'hris remained the backbone of the ADF until the mid-2270s, when it was retired in favor of the many new Andorian-designed Starfleet vessels.

    Notes
The Kal'hris-class destroyer is the sister class of the highly successful Itlinal Flan'hris-class fast frigate. In fact, it's essentially the same ship with an identical hull. Only the older PB-4 Mod 2 warp nacelles and the massive PC-54/2 phase cannons are the only real visible differences between the two vessels.

Built for high maneuverability and close combat, the Kal'hris works in tandem with the Itlinal Flan'hris with deadly efficiency.

Also retired in the mid-2270s, the Kal'hris was one of the last Federation warships to ever use phase cannons in combat.

    Miscellaneous Data
    Maneuver Modifiers -2C, +3H, +2T
Traits Vulnerable System (Propulsion), Prototype System (Impulse, +1 shift in Max c)

    Notes
The Ashachak-class strike ship is a space adaptation of a ground support shuttle Andorian design engineers had been working on for most of the 2230s. Taller than it is wide, the "Swift Warrior" presents an odd cross-section that is powered by the PB-32 Mod 3 warp engine, a full five years before it would appear on the most famous of cruiser classes, the Constitution-class.

Frighteningly fast, the Ashachak is designed to operate in small fighter-like squadrons, using concentrated fire and hit-and-run tactics to harass the enemy. However, the overdriven SBD impulse engines have proven to be vulnerable to damage under stress, making the combat losses of the Ashachak more than the ADF is "comfortable" with.

Ashachak strike ships served with distinction for over 50 years, and the class was retired after the Khitomer Accords were signed in 2293.

    Yeah, working hard, as always.

I'm going to write up some Vulcan exploration ships of the early 23rd C. next.
