    Expanded Starship Operation Questions?

The book is great but I have a few questions, and maybe there are some other guys with question regarding this extra-ordinary book. If so post them here:

    1) When your ship is refited (pg 43) does the actual Size(lenght/height/beam) of the vessel increases? Does it become bigger?

    2) Warp Signatures (pg 39) : How do you handle Masking a warp trail so that is more difficult to follow?

Any comment on these questions is welkom.

    1) I would presume it depends on the type of refit. for computer components and such, if it follows reality, the old space in the ship might be slightly reconfigured to accomodate the newer comptuer systems and such. For gross structural upgrades (like the TOS Consitution class to the TMP Constitution Class), then depending on the upgrades nature, then yes.

    2) hmm...well, there isa Silent Running option in the online Expanded ship operations manual by KillerWhale. I'd have to look at that before I could give a better answer
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

    BouncyCaitian is right...

    1. You have a rule in ESO p.43 that allows increasing the ship Size, but refits are anyway heavily dependent on the story. I'd say any upgrades should really be plot-driven before being rules-driven.

    2. Huh... P.39 of ESO there are rules for detecting warp trails. I'd say the TN of the test, instead of being 5 + 3 / hr of passage, could be test result of the enginner for masking the trail + 3 / hr of passage. Masking the trail should be a lengthy and difficult task in order to avoid abuse.

    I hope this helps!

    Questions on Killer Whales ESO

I was looking at the marvellous PDf book that Killer Whale made and had a few questions (I have version 1.0):

On page 106, game information is presented for the Scimitar. I was not sure I understood how some data was arrived at.

1)Plasma torpedos are listed as RTP-5. According to Starships, they have an offense of 22, and multiplied by 3 that is 66. According to table 1.23 in Starships that should give a penetration of 9/8/7/6/5, not 11/11/11/11/11.

    Can someone elaborate?

2)Unless I am not following Starships' design info properly, it would seem to me that the Deflector shield rating is poorer than that of the Sovereign (17/4 versus 18/6). I see no compensating factors such as hardened, battle tested, or other things that would reflect the advantages the Scimitar's shields had over the Enterprise's in Nemesis.

    Is this an error?

    Thanks for your assistance.

Excellent points both... I must admit the Scimitar was the last ship I did for ESO and I must have been pretty winded. You are correct for both points... When I have the time I'll update the design.

    Thanks for your input!

    Fleet Action Question

    KW, you are the MAN!
I love your book, but I do have a couple of questions.
In fleet actions, is wing size a factor of the ship size, or structure boxes. If it is structure boxes, then how does the damage value manage to exceed that size number to cause damage.
Second, where can I get the updated files you have mentioned. Your website has version 1.0.
And, again, YOU RULE. The best netbook I have seen. Right up there with Spacedock.

    Welcome back again KW

Just as a quick note (without looking at my reference copy of Starships) - in the words of the film the Scimitar had X number of photon torpedoes.

Now you could simply say that it was the crew of the Enterprise who simply brand named them - (like calling a vacuum cleaner a 'Hoover') - and simply make them Plasma torpedoes..

Or you could rebuild them and actually make them photon torpedoes, to justify your point expenditure

    aelius: Thank YOU!
I'm not sure I follow you for the Size question - indeed, all structures are summed up to determine the wing's size, and the offense is subtracted from the size. Shield values being averaged and not summed up, like offense values, you can perfeclty cause damage (normally...)
There are no other versions released than 1.0 for the moment, unfortunately. I don't currently have the time to work on the book anymore, although I'd like to plan some updates and spelling corrections...

Tobian: thanks Ah, the glories of canon evidence. Looks like I missed this one and that my Scimitar is not that realistic. I'll make them photons, that seems the best tactic, indeed. Thank you

Hey guys, you know the French equivalent to "don't let things get to your head" is... "don't let your ankles swell" (Ok, I know, that's just weird).

I'm glad to announce that I officially now cannot get into any of my old shoes

    Thanks for your support!

Hehe some things just don't translate !

It's likelly that the Scimitar was cobbled together from a number of sources, becausde it was apparently built in secret, under the noses of the Romulans, so it fortunatelly doesn't mess to much with Deciphers 'Plasma Torpedo' concept (and LUG before it)

I actually won a copy of Nemisis on the Startrek Guru quiz Unfortunatelly I already have it - but I'm not giving it away, because it's one of only 2 things I ever won!

That's true, and that'll allow me to fix the thing without having to redo all calculations

Someday I'll buy Nemesis... eventually. Seen it. Disliked it...
