    [Coda Starships] Starfleet Prototype, 2291-92

The following 7 ships originally appeared in the book "Starfleet Prototype: The Journal of Innovative Design and Ideas", published by Mastercom Data Center of Wilbraham, MA in 1992.

Even though one class, the Belknap, was published as a "production" model, I consider all six of these vessels to be casualties of the 2293 Khitomer Accords.

The Belknap-class strike cruiser was originally designed as a follow-on sister program to the refitted Constitution-class heavy cruiser. Although launched in 2283, the Belknap would rely heavily on the Excelsior-class transwarp program, as it was slated to be the second production class to receive the engines, once testing was successfully completed.

The Belknap looks almost exactly like the Constitution refit, with two exceptions: The interhull pylon is shorter and sturdier, and the warp nacelle pylons extend out and up from the ventral side of the Belknap's engineering hull. This provides for a more compact ship, designed for combat and defense, with little scientific capability.

When the transwarp program failed, the Belknap program was put on hiatus and eventually killed after the signing of the Khitomer Accords in 2293.

USS Belknap (NCC-2501) was the only ship produced.

USS Ranger (NCC-2701) was one of the six major prototype casualties of the Khitomer Accords. A graceful light cruiser design, the Ranger was actually larger than the Constitution refit, sporting a flatter nacelle pylon configuration and a thinner, longer hull.

Despite the success of the Miranda-class program, Starfleet didn't have a true light cruiser successor to the Anton, prompting the design of the Ranger. Exceptionally fast, the prototype exceeded design expectations of a wf13.0 maximum speed. Combined with advanced reaction control systems, the Ranger was an incredibly maneuverable ship.

Starfleet was about to approve production of the vessel when the Khitomer Accords were signed, but decided to scrap the program in lieu of the greater versatility of the Miranda-class.

Editor's Note: This class name conflicts with the Ranger-class explorer of the Ship Operations Manual. As the earlier Ranger ended its production cycle in the 2256, and the lead ship of the original class was lost decades ago, there shouldn't be a problem. The light cruiser class is simply a tribute to the exemplary performance of its predecessor.

The USS Thruxton (NCC-2761) prototype was designed with one purpose in mind: war with the Klingons. During the late 2280s, increasing tensions between the Klingons and the Federation prompted a myriad of combat-oriented designs, including the reintroduction of battle cruisers to Starfleet's inventory.

Euphamistically termed a "tactical cruiser," the Thruxton was extremely compact, connecting a flat engineering hull directly to the aft saucer section, and flattening the nacelle pylons so that they would extend almost horizontally from the ship.

Her sensors matched the capabilities of many scouts and she rated high in combat trials, although her phasers were not as powerful as the Belknap's. All-in-all, the Thruxton was slated to become a front-line vessel in the next confrontation with the Klingon Empire.

When it became clear that the Khitomer Accords would finally be signed in 2293, the Thruxton program was indefinitely shelved, although it briefly received consideration following the Thomed Incident.

The Scimitar-class destroyer (prototype NCC-2901) was another of the "fast combatants" designed for an "inevitable" war with the Klingons by the turn of the 24th Century.

The destroyer has no engineering hull; most of the ship's engineering systems were crammed into the aft saucer section and dorsal pylon, and the torpedo suite placed beneath the twin nacelles (which were placed side-by-side in the middle of the pylon).

Somewhat larger than the Wilkerson-class destroyer, the Scimitar packs a larger punch than both the Wilkerson and even the larger Baker-class heavy destroyer. The ship was also the test bed for the new "Perseus" PFF 3E ("enhanced") deflector shield system.

When Starfleet began to phase out the Destroyer type designation following the Khitomer Accords in 2293, the Scimitar program was also scrapped, although USS Scimitar itself is said to have been one of the cloaked ships involved in the Thomed Incident.

The NCC-2591 prototype USS Phantom was designed to be a "giant leap" in sensor technology. The test bed for the Opera OC9878Z Class 3EX passive sensor system, the Phantom sported a greater sensor detection capability with fewer active emissions, theoretically allowing the ship to remain effectively invisible at longer sensor ranges.

Test results proved less effective than was hoped, as the ship was still recognizable when its sensors were active; the Opera system had a faint, but extremely distinct, signature that made detection of the Phantom possible at longer ranges.

As another addition to the proposed "Tactical Fleet", the Phantom became a casualty of the Khitomer Accords. Lessons learned from the Opera system testing were later incorporated into Starfleet's Class 4 sensor systems of the mid-24th Century.

    Protection/Threshold: 14/4

    Miscellaneous Data
    Maneuver Modifiers: +0C, +3H, -1T
Traits: Unique System (tractor beam), Enhanced System (tractor beam, can tow Size 6 vessels), Vulnerable System (operations)

The Schmidt-class tug prototype was the testbed for a new tractor beam suite that would allow smaller vessels tow larger craft. Previous technology forced the towing vessels to be larger than their towed craft, preventing Starfleet from deploying tugs capable of recovering disabled Constitution-class starships and other large vessels.

The ship uses a saucer hull similar to the Oberth-class surveyor, with a small impulse drive section supported between two short dorsal pylons aft. Two Oberth-style nacelles connect to vertical support pylons port and starboard in an over-under configuration (the ventral nacelles are flipped upside down). The ventral support pylons cut toward centerline and support the ship's massive tractor beam system nacelle.

The Schmidt's GX800 "Grappler" tractor beam system with dedicated KR05-P matter/antimatter reactor allows the vessel to grip the more massive Constitutions, and her powerful PB-16 warp engines provide the power to get the Schmidt and her quarry back to starbase.

Two ships were built (USS Schmidt {NCC-800} and USS Brett {NCC-801}) to test the tandem capability built into the GX800. Trials proved that the Schmidt and the Brett, when using the lattice-like interconnection capability of their tractor beam systems, could actually grip and tow the Excelsior-class exploratory cruiser USS Proxima Centauri at wf3.8!

The GX800 system eventually proved too expensive to produce and maintain, requiring almost constant attention even in mundane situations. The system also proved fragile in stress testing, as the dedicated reactor was vulnerable to external stresses (like enemy fire). The class was limited to the two prototype vessels, the pair serving with distinction into the mid-2330s.

The Archangel-class "shuttle carrier" (prototype NCC-2294) was nominally classified a form of specialized tender, although it was Starfleet's first foray into a new realm of combat support. The shuttle tender was designed to carry a specialized type of shuttle, built for fleet-level combat. These "fighters" were a throwback to the century-plus dominance of naval combat aircraft during Earth's nuclear age.

The Archangel uses a standard Miranda-class modified saucer section, extended aft to accomodate the ship's massive shuttle hangar. The impulse drive system rests on the aft end of the "hangar hull." The warp nacelles extend down from pylons on the ventral aft, and are connected to each other by a supporting nacelle strut forward.

The combat shuttle's development was delayed by technical issues and resistance within the exploration arm to such a radical strategic change. This delayed the Archangel's development, although testing with standard shuttle complements proved highly successful.

The Khitomer Accords ended the combat shuttle development program, and thusly the Archangel program. The ship dropped its "shuttle carrier" designation for the more traditional "shuttle tender," and entered service. The Archangel was retired after an engineering accident in 2315.
