    [Coda Starships] Starfleet, 2300-2339

Okay, we're now in the 24th Century. I've broken the Starfleet ships into three eras: pre-2340, 2340-2367, and 2368 on.

Please be mindful that these conversions are based on Steve Long's Spacedock stats.

The Apollo-class light cruiser reflects the aesthetics of its Vulcan designers, with a trapezoidal nacelle support surrounding a long cylindrical hull that can be traced back to before the pre-Federation Surak-class cruisers.

Primarily a transport, the Apollo is fast and maneuverable enough to avoid most trouble.

The Hokule'a-class scout was part of the Federation's expansion in the early part of this century. Resembling an old earth sailing vessel called a catamaran, the Hokule'a received a service upgrade in the early 2360s, and served admirably in the Dominion War, oftentimes behing-enemy-lines. Some vessels of the class (about a third) received further upgrades in 2372 to support DW missions.

One of the most popular smaller ships in the fleet, the Mediterranean-class frigate was originally designed as a general purpose vessel. Performing a wide range of missions, the class received a refit in 2358 that improved its sensor capability.

Starfleet command recently approved a large-scale refit using lessons learned from the Dominion War. The 2377 version of the frigate featured atmospheric capability, pulse phasers, Mk 80 DF torpedoes, and ablative armor. Unfortunately, the Med's power plant wasn't designed to manage all of the upgrades, resulting in an extremely capable, but underpowered, vessel.

Developed in response to the Tomed Incident, the Merced-class escort was originally designed as a "strike" cruiser, but later downgraded when it became apparent that the Romulans chose to isolate themselves.

Although only 16 ships were built over a four-year period, the class has proven highly functional and all 16 remain in service today. Short-range vessels, Merceds are attached to starbases as support and defense ships.

Starfleet expects to retire the class at the end of the century.

Built as the sister class to the Excelsior-class exploratory cruiser, the Renaissance-class cruiser proved to be a capable combat vessel, easily outgunning most Klingon battle cruisers of the time. By the time the class received its 2340 refit, the Renaissance's tactical systems were woefully out of date. Starfleet began phasing the class out in 2377, with some vessels being offered to friendly governments for system defense.

Designed as part of the Coreward Exploratory Directive in the 2320s, the Rigel-class heavy scout has proven an exceptional vessel. Used as an intelligence gatherer in the Dominion War, the class is now being slowly decommissioned, with many Rigels being converted into freighters for the Federation Merchant Marine.

Built for frontier patrol, the Wambundu-class heavy cruiser shared elements of it's Constitution-class predecessor and the later Galaxy-class explorer. Members of the class served as testbeds for the Type X phaser in the 2350s before the Nebula was launched in 2357. The class later received the Type XI upgrade in 2363, although Starfleet reduced its phaser coverage do to a change in philosophy earlier in that decade.

Because of the success of the PDD, the Wambundu is being taken from the front lines and reassigned to lesser duties. Starfleet plans to begin refitting and recommissioning many vessels of the class starting in 2379.
