    [Coda Starships] Starfleet, 2368-present

Okay, this is the last of the three 24th Century Starfleet threads. Look for the 24th Century Romulan and Gorn threads, along with the miscellaneous ships thread, to come.

One of three "Frankenstein" classes that the Federation hastily put together for during the height of the Dominion War, the Centaur-class cruiser exists only for combat.

As of 2378, all but a few ships of the class have been mothballed until their ultimate fate can be decided. It's likely that as many older classes of standard vessels are retired, they will replace these odd vessels as the Federation's reserve in times of war.

Another hastily-built cruiser, the Curry is configured to carry fighters into battle, or large amounts of cargo to war ravaged planets and colonies.

Due to its ungainly configuration, the Curry suffers from significant phaser arc shadows.

The third of the Perimeter Defense Directive ships, the Norway-class heavy frigate represents the epitome of Starfleet's automation capabilities. One of the fastest vessels in the fleet, the Norway's deceptively simplistic design belies it's offensive capabilities.

Norway-class frigates normally perform perimeter defense, patrol and threat response duties. All 32 ships of the class are still in service as of 2378.

The ASDB has proposed a 2379 refit that would include adding pulse phasers and ablative armor. Starfleet plans to approve the refit later this year.

Another product of the PDD, the Saber-class is only slightly larger than the Defiant-class Heavy Escort, from which many of its design elements are derived from.

Easy to produce, most Sabers are assigned to hostile frontier patrol, combat support, and escort duties. Starfleet is considering an ASDB proposal to add pulse phasers, ablative armament and stronger shields to the improve the vessel's combat capability.

Note: This version of the Saber is based on the Saber that appears in the Starfleet Operations Manual.

Often referred to as the "Baby Galaxy," the Sequoia-class heavy cruiser is only slighter smaller than the ship it is strongly based on. More heavily armed than a Galaxy, the Sequoia expects to be refitted with Type XI phasers within the next few years.

The second of the Perimeter Defense Directive ships, the Steamrunner-class heavy frigate was designed with relatively specific mission profiles in mind, including perimeter patrol and defense, long-range threat response, covert operations, and combat support. It's also the first Starfleet vessel to mount mono-reflective plating.

Note: This version of the Steamrunner is based on the Steamrunner that appeared in the Starfleet Operations Manual.

Another of the "Frankenstein" designs, the Yeager-class light cruiser served as a transport, escort and patrol vessel during the Dominion War. As with the Curry and the Centaur, almost the entirety of the class has been mothballed until its ultimate fate can be decided.

Looking pretty good, Sea Tyger, but a couple of things spring up.

    1) In order to fire quantum torps, the Saber needs a better torp launcher: at least a Mk 75 DF.

    2) You've given the Steamrunner too many shuttle bays. You're limited to half the size, rounded down; three in this case. See p. 11.

I also find it slightly strange that the much smaller Saber has a stronger hull than the Steamrunner, but that's just me.

    1) You're right, and I know that...I probably was looking at the launch date and just added that in without thinking clearly. It certainly wasn't on the worksheet.

    2) That was a typo. I had dropped the shuttlebays down to one, but must've skipped it as I was changing the values from my earlier Coda version.

    3) Simple. The Saber is designed as a simpler ship, with fewer bells and whistles (like the Steamrunner's masking system). As such, I could afford to put space intro structure (also, it's compensation for the vulnerable propulsion system trait). Because of the better gear on the Steamrunner (better Sensors and Life Support, the masking system, more powerful impulse and warp drives, more powerful [and more, period] phaser systems, more powerful torps, better shields, and ablative armor...that's a lot of extra gear for just 16 extra space), I had to burn 5 structure to make it all fit.

    Anyway, I've corrected the typos.

Hey, I can appreciate the Saber being a tough little ship. I might just have to assign some characters to one of them following their graduation from the Academy; it would be a great opportunity for low-ranking officers to play a more vital role in ship operations. And the tougher the ship, the more trouble I can get them in...

By the way, thanks for doing all these starship writeups. It saves me a lot of time which I can devote to other things, like tormenting my intrepid Cadets.

And what a worthy cause that is.
