    [Coda Starships] Miscellaneous Ships

Okay, the following ships don't fit into any of the other threads, mainly because they're my own homebrew designs.

The so-called "Sea Tyger"-class cruiser was inspired by my insistence at one point that Starfleet needed an all-purpose cruiser after the Dominion War.

The three Marchenti Shipping Corporation ships were in response to Aslan wanting more ships to pore over last summer.

The Bajoran Kai Wynn-class escort is Bajor's first military starship, as they look to reduce their dependence on Starfleet and the Federation while they ponder membership.

The Eagle-class exploratory cruiser is based on a ship I "commanded" in an online RPG.

The Orion Fespar-class long range merchantman is a 2230s-era ship that I was using in a 2270s Starfleet Intel campaign.

A conceptual design from Utopia Planitia Shipyards engineers Aslan Collas and Davy Jones, this prototype standard cruiser is intended to fill a gap left behind by the advent of Starfleet's move toward specialized starships over the last 20 years.

Built for a myriad of duties, the so-called "Sea Tyger"-class cruiser is built for flexibility.

Using a blunt arrowhead saucer configuration and a twin engineering hull, the Sea Tyger presents a compact profile.

Note: This ship was inspired by the Sea Tyger-class Cruiser Round Table.

The Marchenti Shipping Corporation operates a fleet of 76 ships (in three classes).

    The classes are:

C-5 Fleet Freighter (4 fleets of 12 ships)
C-6 Fast Freighter (affectionately called the "Pregnant Guppy") (12 ships)
E-1 Border Escort (4 squadrons of 4 ships)

Marchenti operates along border routes and colonial shipping lanes, often running its C-5 freighters in groups of 3-4 vessels, with an E-1 as escort. In larger operations (such as colonial support runs), Marchenti will operate full fleets of C-5s together with a squadron of E-1s. The C-6s all operate independently, getting cargo to locations that absolutely, positively, need it quickly (and are willing to pay higher fees).

The company was founded in 2131, its first ships running along the Earth-Vulcan trade corridor. As of 2378, Marchenti is one of the Federation's premier shipping companies, with profits rivalling many Ferengi operators.

The C-5-class of fleet freighter was built to replace the aging fleet of C-4s, which was first launched in 2327. Using the latest in Federation cargo-handling technology, the C-5 is cheap to produce and maintain.

The hull resembles the top-half of a cigar, with cargo mountings connecting 20 modules to the flat ventral side. Each module is capable of interconnecting lengthwise with adjacent modules for large or awkwardly shaped cargoes.

The C-5 completely replaced the C-4 by 2371, and expects to be the mainstay of the Marchenti fleet through the end of the century.

The C-6 represents a new direction for Marchenti. Built from a roughly Class III Tanker-esque hull (extended aft), the C-6 also carries a detachable cargo section that doubles the height of the ship when attached (already reflected in the stats above; the ship is 61m high without the cargo section). The two warp nacelles sit amidships along the main hull. The awkward configuration has earned the freighter the nickname "Pregnant Guppy."

The C-6 is the largest freighter ever built for Marchenti Shipping, and is designed for independent operation. Extremely fast and sturdy, the freighter can get large cargoes to remote sites quickly and efficiently, and can outrun most trouble. However, the warp engines put heavy stress on the ship's structure, causing damage at high warp speeds. Marchenti ship captains consider the extra speed well worth the risk. So far, no C-6 has been lost in a decade of operation.

In response to hostilities with both the Tholians and Cardassians in recent decades, the Marchenti Shipping Corporation commissioned a class of escorts to protect its fleet of freighters from increasing numbers of renegades and pirates.

Technically a light cruiser, its dorsal profile resembles the double blade of an executioner's axe, with the warp nacelles situated on the ventral edge of the wings. A raised section centerline extends from bow to stern, housing the bridge, crew facilities, engine room and impulse drive, giving the escort the vague appearance of an inverted 23rd Century Romulan Bird of Prey.

While not a skirmisher by any means, the E-1 has excellent stand-off capability for a vessel of its size.

Built at 40 Eridani A Shipyards for the Bajoran government, the Kai Winn-class escort is the first new Bajoran-designed warp-capable warship to enter service since the occupation.

Strongly resembling the basic shape of USS Defiant, the Kai Winn features a relatively flat, ovoid hull, with two warp nacelles close to the hull amidships.

Bajor has a contract with 40EAS to produce 15 escorts over the next five years. The Kai Winn launched in mid-2378, and the second ship of the line, the Li Nalas, will launch later in the year. The Vedek Bariel and the Vindra Galen are currently in production.

All ships of the class are named for heroes of the Bajoran resistance during the Cardassian Occupation.

Editor's note: The first three names are from DS9 episodes...I figure that since Kira Nerys is still on active duty, she's either not eligible for naming or she's politely asked not to have her name put on a ship until after she retires. The fourth name, Vindra Galen, is an NPC character of mine from a 2370s-era FFRPG PBeM. Her history was that she lived and worked in the home of a Cardassian gul, and passed on secrets to the resistance for nearly 15 years before the occupation ended.

Note: The heavy cruiser version of the Eagle mounted only 3 of each transporter type, Class 4 sensors and Class 4 operations systems, and only carried 30 structure. Instead, it mounted an additional Type XI phaser bank and Mk 95 DF torpedo launcher. Phaser penetration increased to 7/4/4/0/0 and torpedo penetration increased to 6/6/6/6/6 (quantum 7/7/7/7/7).

The Eagle-class cruiser was originally designed as a heavy cruiser, the final vessel of Starfleet's Perimeter Defense Direective. Based on the Sovereign-class heavy explorer design, the Eagle was supposed to replace many of the older Apollo and New Orleans-class vessels on the front lines of the war.

The Eagle followed closely behind the development of the Sovereign, and many of the ship's features mirrored those of its larger cousin. But project overruns and the war effort itself delayed the Eagle's production, and the first ship didn't leave Utopia Planitia Shipyards until 2375, near the end of the war.

USS Eagle, NCC-74709, began space trials three days after the end of the Dominion War, just as Starfleet was seriously considering scrapping the program all together. Vice Admiral T'Lyn, head of the Starfleet Frontier Exploration Command, saw potential in the military vessel and proposed retrofitting the class into an exploratory cruiser.

The Eagle re-entered spacedock to undergo a refit that would see much of its weaponry stripped in favor of a broader exploratory package. Events in early 2376 resulted in the decommissioning of the New Orleans-class frigate USS Ticonderoga, and the second ship of the Eagle line (still under construction), USS Horsehead (NCC-74710), was rechristened USS Ticonderoga.

The Eagle-class Ty was launched in May 2376 and commissioned in July of that year under the command of Captain Tyler Jamison Jones. The USS Eagle herself was relaunched in August of the same year. USS Mutara (NCC-74711) launched in November 2377, and USS Goesthomena is under construction and expects to launch in early 2379. Ships of the Eagle-class are named after nebulae.

Eagle-class cruisers look like proportionately smaller versions of the Sovereign, the only exception being the ships' nacelle struts are swept forward and down.

The Fespar-class long range merchantman has been plying the spacelanes in and around the Orion Colonies since 2239. Built through 2256, the Fespar is "fast enough to get you there, small enough to not be noitced," according to one veteran captain.

Able to be flown with a minimum crew, the Fespar is a favorite of tramp merchants and small-time smugglers of all races.

There are hundreds of Fespars in operation as of 2293, although many are on their last legs. Of course, as with any small craft operated on the fringe of the Federation, many Fespar are heavy modified and uprated to remain functional. Some are so heavily modified that they almost bear no resemblance to their original design.

This is beautiful, Sea Tyger. What a great ship. Just a couple of points- Swept-forward struts do give the Sovereign a 'turkey' look. And I might be tempted to beef up the weapons systems a bit- nah its powerful enough to do its job. This is nice. Good job!

    Whew! I'm finally finished!

    *Davy takes a breath*

As with all of the ships I've presented, everyone is free to use the ships as they see fit. The only thing I ask is that if you publish (on the web or wherever) the Adroit, the 24th Century Gorn ships, or any of the ships I presented in this particular thread, please credit me.

    Thanks!

Thanks. I've always been proud of the Eagle-class design. And the weapons setup was intentional...the ship is designed as an exploratory cruiser, so I put less emphasis on the combat capabilities. As long as the ship isn't running into one of those Size 10+ ships out there, it should be able to hold its own....

I took a second look at the heavy cruiser configuration, and was able to get a few more points out of it (an additional 8, added to the original +3 from the type change). This allowed me to mount an additional weapon of each type (as noted in the italicized text).

    Cool

    Good Lord! (Choke, Gasp)

Don't give in to us munchkins, man!

This ship will give an Akira a run for its money. I'd best invest in Peregrines and Valkyries to keep up!

Seriously, Sea Tyger, there's no need to beef-up the design at all. It's plenty powerful just the way it is.

Did you change the configuration of the nacelles' struts to make it look different from its bigger cousin?

Is there a site where I can get a look at the design?

Contact me privately at my email addy, and I'll email you a piece of art a friend of mine did on the Eagle. I don't think the original website is up anymore.

When I came up with the concept of the ship, I wanted it to be a little different from the Sovereign (given that the game I was playing in was set in 2401). So, my friend suggested the swept forward struts. Since I'm keen on swept forward wing configs (think the old X-31 concept from the late 70s), it wasn't a hard sell...even if it made the Eagle look a little more like another famous American fowl.

And I hadn't planned on upgrading the ship, mind you...just presenting what it would have looked like if it were still a heavy cruiser. That way, the munchkins could take the heavy cruiser config and go blow up the galaxy to their hearts' content.
