Perimeter Action Fleet (ICON, CODA, WHATEVER)

I am thinking of creating the Perimeter Action ships, like the Akula class using the new Starships book and was wondering if anyone had some background for them. I got the blueprints off of http://www.gilsostartrekschematics.c...trekindex.html .It's a great site, lots of blueprints and cutaways. But like I said, I got the blueprints of the PA ships and was wondering if anyone had any background history on them. They seem to be ancestors of the Defiant, with the amount of firepower they're packing into those hulls. I'll be posting my attempts at writing them up soon.

I have stats worked out, but I'm in Florida for the next two weeks driving my Dad around for a reunion and a vacation... long story.... anyway, I'm away from my computer.... and my files of the ship, found the info from books mentioned and other sources. I'm also working on the Ranger-class from the LUG TOS RPG. It was an interesting design to have going around besides just the Constitution-class for that period. I just had to increase it's size from 4 to 5 to make it work, and gave it Phase Cannons and Photorps with the prototype edge to increase it's firepower. But back to the Akula, Akyazi, etc. I do have stats, just not with me...
But as soon as I'm home, I'll actually post stats for the ships for the thread that I started....
but that'll be in 12 days...

    Well you also have:

    Excelsior
    Miranda
    Oberth
    Constellation

But I agree, If you are looking for a small ship to start your campaign on that isn't an underpowered science vessel (Oberth) another class of ship was needed.

I look foreward to seeing your version.

And I did up a crew roster as well.
I used Steve Long's version from SRM 4 to get the percentages and used the Escort category.

    Wink

The original source says 8 officers and 76 crew, so demote everyone one rank (i.e. make all those ensigns into petty officers) and you'd be closer to the mark. These are down and dirty border patrol vessels not top heavy explorers...

Except the NG or SOM states that starfleet ships operate with about 40% officers.

I based the crew amounts on that. Use whichever source best suites your game.

I tweaked the design slightly taking into account some of the text from the book. And I added the space cost.

    Pretty sweet little ship

Here is my take on the PA ships. I used information from the books and several sites, wanted to give it more than just a little background.

    Background:
Up until the Khitomer Accords took place in the late 23rd century, a Cold War was brewing between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. It was held at bay only by the power of the Organians and their fragile peace treaty. After a while, though, it became apparent that the Organians had either become uninterested in our affairs or were too embroiled with something else, and thus the Klingons started to make much more bold moves towards testing our technology. To counter this and protect Federation borders from the Klingons and the other hostile empires surrounding us, a new type of starship was developed, the Perimeter Action Vessel. This ship was designed for 100% exhaustion, meaning that all of its energy would go towards repelling an attack. This was in hopes that the small ship would be able to hold off any aggressor till reinforcements arrived, even at the cost of the PA. The original design doctrines called for a single Akyazi to be able to hold of a Klingon battlecruiser for at least 35 minutes, inflicting 20 percent casualties. The ship was designed with a large number of lifeboats to increase crew survivability. In addition, the main ship itself was built with a secondary impulse drive system to help increase its chances for survival. The results of these doctrines were developed into the three subclasses of the Akyazi class ships.
The first subclass, the Akyazi, was designed to be the overall baseline of the fleet, employing a well-rounded approach. It was the best mix of speed, armament and shielding. The other two classes, Arbiter and Akula were a bit more specialized. The Arbiter was meant to be slightly better armed and a bit faster, while the Akula employed a special deflector spire, making it much more durable to enemy weapons fire at the cost of speed. All three ships were designed with the basic doctrines in mind, that they would need to get to a combat area fast and do as much damage as possible in order to hold off a Threat force till reinforcements could arrive. As a result, these ships ended up being the fastest class of ships for their time, with individual starships breaking numerous speed records.
The basic design of the Akyazi class starships is similar to most starships of the time. However, the nacelles were brought down farther, almost pointing straight out to the side, and pulled closer to the ship to decrease its sensor profile. The warp drive pylons extended outwards from a small engineering pod which contained the main reactor along with the impulse drive systems. In an emergency, the entire engineering assembly could be jettisoned, while the primary hull would continue on with the emergency impulse drive system. As was mentioned before, numerous lifeboats were added to the design to increase crew survivability. In addition, the bridge module itself was fitted with a magnetic propulsion unit similar to the shuttlecraft in use at the time in order to allow it to be used as an autonomous spacecraft should it need to be jettisoned.
The weapons systems of the Akyazi group of ships consisted of overloaded phaser banks, which were almost as powerful as the phaser cannons on the Miranda class, as well as multiple high-yield photon torpedo tubes. The Akyazi bridge was extremely different in configuration than most bridges of the time. The standard bridge crew consisted of the captain, helmsman, navigator, engineering/communications officer, weapons system officer, defense systems officer, a tactical officer, and a strategic officer. There was also a rather small, stand up station used for science sensor monitoring. However, a science officer was rarely needed for this class of ships, as they only had one purpose, combat.
After the Khitomer accords made war with the Klingons a slim possibility at best, and the Romulans started to get into another period of isolation, the Akyazi class didn't find much use too long after its inception. The ships did participate in a number of border skirmishes, where their performance was exemplary. They were also brought into service during the Tholian war. Other than that, though, the Federation Council found no need for this type of ship, and thus the project was cancelled by the beginning of the 24th century. However, the advances and general ideas brought up by this class of ship would eventually live on in a similar vessel type of the late 24th century, the Defiant class escort.
