[Coda-Starship] Way of D'era Romulan ships

Allright! Sea Tyger and I have been working on this project for a while now and we're glad to say it's finally completed. We endeavoured to 'stat' out all of the ship classes that were mentionned in the LUG supplement 'Way of D'era'. We each picked a number of ships to do and so I'm presenting my part while Sea Tyger will soon follow suit with his.

    with no further adue...

    NOTES

The D’Vanga-Class Heavy Warbird’s design is based on a streamlined profile of the D’Deridex. Its “wings” have been elongated and the height has been reduced. The warp engines located at the tips of the wing are almost totally embedded within the wings, giving the D’vanga a unique look. The command pod has a bird-like appearance but it is much more streamlined. The D’Vanga fullfills many of the mission requirements that the D’Deridex performs and so it is a well-rounded ship. It is equipped with large shuttlebays and transporter facilities. The D’Vanga is a lighter unit and it is fairly maneuvrable for a ship of that size. The D’Vanga is equipped with numerous disruptor arrays that are of medium power, which is an unusual deviation from the standard Romulan practice of installing only a few, but high-powered disruptor banks. Most D’Vangas are deployed within Command Fleets stationed near the Taurhai border. The reminders saw heavy action during the Dominion War where they performed fairly well, although many were lost. There are currently no upgrades proposed but the D’Vanga will remain in service quite well into the 25th century.

    NOTES

The T’Varo-Class Swift Warbird is a departure from the more classical warbird designs in that it was designed according to narrow specification. First and foremost, the design specifications called for a fast and maneuvrable vessel that could counter the recent slew of “fast” Starfleet vessels recently introduced. Like its larger cousin, the D’Valek-Class Swift Warbird the T’Varo can reach trouble spots quickly and keep the pace with smaller units due to its above-average maneuvrability for a ship of that size. The T’Varo has a similar armament suit to the D’Valek but its plasma torpedoes aren’t quite as powerful. The T’Varo is well protected however, which in the end gives the T’Varo great flexibility: it is powerful enough to engage most targets yet fast enough to effectively disengage if it meets an enemy group too powerful for it. The T’Varo can often be found alongside the D’Valek which is the central element of the new rapid-response Core Defence fleets. The T’Varo has a streamlined shape and when viewed from the side it looks quite flat. From the top it looks more like a bat with its wings that become narrower towards the central hull but that flare up as they stretch towards the warp nacelles.

    NOTES

The T’Kassan Strike Warbird is one of the newest additions to the fleet. It is part of a new wave of warbirds whose design focus on certain aspects over others, unlike the more traditional warbirds like the D’Deridex or the V’Tir. The T’Kassan was primarily designed to be able to deliver crippling blows with its powerful plasma torpedoes. The T’Kassan trades some structural solidity for overall improved system durability. It has an energy armor screen similar to the one installed on the new Norexan Attack Warbirds. The armor reinforces specific parts on the ship that are vulnerable during combat. Unfortunately, like on the Norexan, the armor interferes somewhat with transporter operations (but obviously not in a manner which would render the use of transporters unsafe) but Romulan engineers are working hard to correct the flaw. Another problem with the T’kassan is that plasma torpedoes require so much power for a ship of that size that sometimes they cause plasmic surges which can damage the launchers during combat. The T’Kassan is a rather unwieldy ship and it is often accompanied by smaller units. The T’Kassan looks like a giant swooping bird with its very long wings and short command hull.

    NOTES

The Ralek-Class Starbird is the standard Romulan heavy exploratory vessel. Like its Starfleet counterparts the Ralek performs primarily long-range exploratory duties and scientific research. For a Romulan ship of that size it is somewhat underarmed but it is nonetheless a solidly-built ship that can survive well outside the range of the Romulan core support facilities. The Ralek’s transporters have been upgraded to facilitate the transportation of personnel and equipment in adverse planetary conditions. The Raleks form the core of the Navy’s Exploration Command.

    NOTES

The V’Tana-class Far Starbird is a streamlined version of its larger starbird cousins like the T’Rasus and the Ralek. It has fairly large ‘wings’ equipped with warp engines at its tips and a a rather ‘stubby’ central section which flares up towards the stern of the ship, looking like some bird’s tail. The command section’s width has been reduced, giving it a very sleek appearance. Like the other Starbirds the V’Tana’s primary mission if of exploration. The V’Tana is a reasonably fast ship and it is well equipped to expand the frontiers of the Empire, far away from the Empire’s core worlds. Many combat-minded commanders however are troubled by its lack of armament. The standard RPFD-3 disruptors have been upgraded on the V’Tana but to very little effect. The V’tana is well-liked however by the Exploration Command’s crews which enjoy its roomy quarters and work facilities.

    NOTES

The Vithrel is the first bird-of-prey design entering service in the Romulan Star Navy in more than 70 years. Many fleet commanders were nostalgic for a dedicated attack craft which possess the qualities that made the earlier bird-of-prey cruisers so successful. This time it was decided however to build a new bird-of-prey design around an escort-based frame. Like most of its predecessors such as the Tellus or the Ganum, the Vithrel’s central structure is shaped like a tear drop in the typical bird-of-prey fashion. Its underhull is replete with large energy dampeners which look like the feathers of a bird. Those energy dampeners help the ship conceal its energy signature making the Vithrel harder to detect. The Vithrel is a fast and maneuvrable ship designed to strike hard and fast at an unsuspecting target and leave before the enemy can organise a response. The Vithrel’s force lays in its stealthy features and its speed; its ability to take damage however is limited. Hence, it was not designed to fight in prolonged engagements. The Vithrels are often grouped together in assault wings which are specifically tasked with reconnaissance and ambush duties.

    NOTES

The Phaeros-Class Cruiser is the newest medical vessel of the Star Navy. It was designed to complement the larger Borvel-Class medical cruiser. The Borvel is an all-around medical ship, equipped to deal with a diverse range of medical emergencies, including treating epidemics. The Phaeros is a smaller design specifically geared towards treating combat injuries on the battlefield. The Phaeros has smaller facilities and can accommodate less patients but those facilities are state of the art and the Phaeros is meant to travel in wings of 2 or 3. The Phaeros was built with good shields and has many redundant systems, especially those related to operations and life support, which all make the ship more resilient if attacked. Also, the Phaeros is equipped with a modified version of the ubiquitous RPFD-3 disruptor, giving it the ability to fend off smaller attackers. The Phaeros was built has a fast and maneuvrable ship, which is a novelty for what is essentially a small hospital in space. The maneuvrability helps the ship staying out of trouble if attacked and it high warp speed ability allows it to be part of rapid response wings. Also a very unusual trait for a medical ship which is found on the Phaeros is its cloaking device. The Phaeros did so well during the Dominion War that a larger version is planned, with hardened systems and an improved warp drive.

    NOTES

The Nelvek is the Romulan Star Navy’s standard heavy cruiser. It is a versatile ship, able to perform the missions of some starbirds or some warbirds. Like most Romulan cruisers it is a good blend of speed and firepower, with good stealth capabilities due to its efficient cloaking device. The Nelveks have always been quite appreciated by their commanders and crews but the design is starting to show its age however. Many of the lighter warbirds such as the T’Varo and the D’Sera are seen as good contenders to fill the Nelvek’s niche in the Star Navy. Many Nelveks were lost in action throughout the years against Klingon, Taurhai and Dominion foes and those that are left are relegated to patrol duties. During those encounters against the enemies of the Empire the Nelvek always performed admirably, earning still to this day the respect of the Empire’s foes.

    NOTES

The Serex-Class Heavy Frigate is the Romulan Star Navy’s standard heavy patrol ship. It was designed to be deployed along the empire’s borders with its enemies, being deployed on the outskirts of the Neutrol Zone, the Klingon border and the Taurhai containment zone. The Serex is equipped with a good suit of sensors to monitor effectively its designated patrol zone. The Serex was designed to also be able to effectively intercept any enemy transgressor and so it possesses a respectable amount of weaponry. The Serex also has notably above-average shields for a frigate. The Serex is regarded as such a potent performer that many were diverted from their patrol duties within the Empire to serve as frontline vessels during the Dominion War.

The D’Tavan Strike Frigate is a recent designed introduced to fill a specific niche in the Romulan fleet. The concept called for a patrol ship that had superior firepower and that could easily be re-deployed from one sector to another to meet any potential threat. The ability to intercept enemy units faster meant that less ships could cover more territory. The D’Tavan so far has proved to be quite effective in its designated role. It has been optimised to engage enemy units at close range and therefore it is quite maneuvrable. Its disruptors have been upgraded to have a greater punch at point-blank ranges. On the other hand the D’Tavan was not designed to be used in prolonged engagements as its systems are relatively more brittle, especially battle-critical systems like weapons and shields. Many D’Tavan were sent hastily to fight in the Dominion War and they didn’t perform as well as they did when they were assigned within the Empire. Despite its shortcomings the D’Tavan performs well in its originally assigned role (that of a “rapid-response” patrol unit) and production of the class will run well into the 25th century.

    NOTES

The Vadak-Class Heavy Gunship is the predecessor of the D’Gerok-Class gunship. It was built to serve as an in-system attack ship, fighting either spaceborne or planetside units. The Vadak thusly has been designed to be atmosphere capable. Its disruptors and torpedo launchers have been modified to fit in a vessel of that size. Even with those modifications the Vadak is regarded as being somewhat lacking in firepower. The design also has recurring problems with its cloaking device which is more susceptible to battle damage and with its impulse engines. Whenever the Vadak goes above ‘full impulse’ (0.25c) some structural stress damage occurs. Since the introduction of the vastly more popular D’Gerok and V’Gurin gunships the bulk of the Vadak fleet has been reassigned to secondary sectors deep within the Empire and/or to minor senatorial fleets.

    NOTES

The Kelkarrum is the standard Romulan light scout. It is a rather smallish craft but it is quite capable in its assigned role. It has good sensors and good stealth abilities. The Kelkarrum wasn’t designed as a fighting craft although it can hold its own when fighting smaller opponents. This Romulan scour is also notably fast and maneuvrable, which makes it a favorite among Romulan pilots. One of its greatest asset is its simple design, which allows it to be built and sustained in great numbers.

    NOTES

The Tirethi Far Scout’s design was based on the Starfleet’s Talon Scout plans, which were gracefuly « borrowed » by the Tal Shiar. One of the Tal Shiar’s agents working at Station McKinley near Earth passed along the information that Starfleet was studying the feasability of a sleak scout design with strong sensor capabilities, which could be deployed very easily in any required sector with a minimal crewand which would also have sound tactical abilities. The Romulans were intrigued and started working on the Tirethi development program. Their biggest problem was how to fit a Class 4 sensor suit on such a small ship, while fitting the ship in proper Romulan fashion with a cloaking device. The Romulan development team at the Ran’Gor shipyards were at a standstill until they received some help, yet again, from the Tal Shiar. The Romulan spies shifted their attention on the Klingons, who were adapting their cloaking devices to small crafts like the Suv’Tis attack craft and in short time they were able to acquire some crucial information that would enable the Romulan scientists at Ran’Gor to complete the Tirethi. The Tirethi was put to good use during the Dominion War, were it proved to be a nightmare to the Dominion forces which had a hard time tracking them down.

    NOTES

The Nir’At Heavy Scout is a cousin class to the Deresus-Class Heavy Scout. Like the Deresus, the Nir’At was designed to act like a hybrid destroyer/scout. The Nir’At however is a simpler version of the concept, without having quite the same combat abilities as the Deresus. The Nir’At is thus simpler to build and to service, making it easier to deploy in great numbers. The Nir’At often finds itself used as a picket ship or as an escort in convoys. Some commanders expressed concerns about its limited impulse speed capabilties, a concern that was addressed in the ‘Expansion Directive’ refit of the early 2350’s. The class was fitted with the uprated Class 2 impulse engines, a better cloaking device and a shield upgrade.
