    [CODA-Starship] Taurhai ships

    Hi all!

I've come up with a few ship designs for the Taurhai. For those who wonder who the Taurhai are; they were a non-canon race designed by LUG for the ICON system and they were featured in the Romulan boxed set. The Taurhai are a peaceful (depending on who you ask ) and technologically advanced race who fought the Romulans.

Before I start I came up with a few Taurhai systems for Starship.

BEAM WEAPONS (the Taurhai rarelly use missile weapons):

-Heavy Graviton Beam (treat like Type X phaser)
-Medium Graviton Beam (treat like Type VIII phaser)
-Light Graviton Beam (treat like Type V phaser)

    DEFENSIVE SYSTEMS:

-Energy Nullifier Suit (treat like Mono-refracting plating)
-Level 1 Holographic field (treat like Monotanium plating)
-Level 2 Holographic field (treat like upgraded Monotanium plating)
-Absorbtion fields (treat like shields, except change the first letter of the system for 'flavoring' )

    PROPULSION SYSTEMS:

    Graviton wavefront generators (impulse engines)

    -Class 1 GWG: 0.9c (C) min size:2 space: size-1
    -Class 2 GWG: 0.9c (D) min size:3 space: size-1
    -Class 3 GWG: 0.9c (E) min size:10 space: size-1

-Subspace funnel system (warp engines... of sorts!)

reliability rating (E); space cost: size-1

    SENSOR SYSTEMS:

-same as in Starship with this single exception:

cloaking devices are not very effective against the Taurhai; their rating are divided by half. Ex: a class 4 cloaking device with a rating of 22 sees it rating changes to 11. Additionally, on a visual level, the Taurhai can always see the vague transparant "fuzz" that surrounds a cloaked ship. There are rumors however that the Romulans as of recently (2360's) have been able to overcome that problem.

    here are the ships!

    NOTES

Taurhai starships are made long and sinous, and the Star Dragon is a prime example of that. Their design uses modular segments connected in a series behind a main engineering and command section. The ship can thus make coiling and bending maneuvers, which are unusual. The Star Dragon is the most powerful ship in the Taurhai fleet, where it serves with distinction. It is an excellent exploratory and defensive vessel. It is unusually maneuvrable for a ship of that size; a trait put to good use since Taurhai ships have to efficiently close in on their enemies due their near-exclusive use on beam weapons. The Star Dragon has proven to be the bane of many Romulan commanders during the war, for many reasons. First of all, as with all Taurhai ships its subspace 'funnel' system could make it appear without warning and catch the Romulans unprepared. Its energy nullifier suit enabled the ship to reduce its signature, making it harder to detect as well- whereas Romulan cloaking devices were nearly useless against Taurhai sensors. If that weren't enough, the ship is equipped with Level 2 holographic fields, which makes it very hard to lock unto. There is little wonder that many Romulan commanders, in the true spirit of D'era, destroyed Star Dragons not by firing on them but rather by ramming their ships on them.

Nice, but didn't the Scimitar wipe these guys homeworld out as a demonstration to the Romulan fleet

Great write ups, thanks for these.

The Starfire-Class Explorer is the standard Taurhai heavy vessel. It is a very versatile ship, suited for a variety of missions. It is often seen leading groups of ships (called "gatherings" by the Taurhai) either on scientific expeditions or defensive missions. The Starfire is equipped with large shuttlebay and transporter facilities, making it ideal for colonial support endeavours. In combat it is a tough ship, with its powerful heavy graviton arrays and its strong shields. It is also quite a fast vessel, which rounds out its tactical abilities nicely.

Very nice. You save me some time, now I don't need to build the ships my self when the Taurhai make their appearance in my Romulan game.

    Thanks.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding...

One of my players mentioned during Nemesis, that the supergun on the Scimitar would be a bad day for the Taurhai - which he did not like.

Once again, nice work ups, with this and the Romulan ships...it is a good day to be a bad guy. Well, that opinion is all based on perspective anyway

    EDGES AND FLAWS

    Level 1 Holographic field (each)

    NOTES

The Solar Wind Cruiser is a unique design. Its primary purpose is defensive (its a warship) and it was designed to separate into two units and fight effectively as a pair of ships. The concept behind the Solar Wind is that it becomes harder for a single large enemy vessel to defeat a pair of smaller ships which, are able to reduce the enemy's shield strength faster due to their separate beam weapon attacks. This also makes the enemy vessel dilute its firepower effectiveness as it is firing on two shield systems instead of one. The two units of the Solar Wind are almost of thew same size, with the main unit being on top of the other, and the second unit being the ship's underhull.

    NOTES

The Celestial Phantom is the standard light vessel of the Taurhai fleet. As with many Taurhai designs, it is a well-rounded ship, able to perform a variety of missions. It is a relatively older design, which explains why it is not suited with holographic fields. It is however a very sturdy design and it is well armed for a ship of its size and it has aquited itself quite well in its many years of service to the Taurhai.

    NOTES

The Great Wanderer is an interesting combination of part exploratory vessel, part transport vessel and part warship. While its armament may not be enough against larger units it more than enough to handle any lesser threat that may come its way. The Wanderer is often escorted by Trident-class escorts, making such battle groups (or 'gatherings' as the Taurhai say) very difficult to attack. During the war the Romulans had a very hard time attacking such Taurhai supply convoys. The Great Wanderer is also equipped with ample exploratory support facilities, freeing the larger classes such as the Star Dragon and the Starfire from more menial internal duties.

    NOTES

The Apothecary is the standard Taurhai medical ship. It was designed to respond to medical emergencies within Unity space and treat battle injuries during fleet actions. Most of its main components have been streamlined in size to maximize space for the medical facilities and accomodate more patients. The Apothecary is also equipped with many specialized labs to treat epidemics and emergencies on the frontier. It has decent tactical abilities for a medical vessel, being able to easily fend off smaller threats. Those abilities were put to good as during the war Romulans were not above attacking medical ships; as the Romulans took really deep offense at the Taurhai's afront to the ways of D'era.

    NOTES

The Trident-Class Light Escort is quite a unique design in the Taurhai fleet. The ship is shaped like a giant 'trident', with the central ship being flanked by a secondary unit on each of its sides. The main feature of the Trident is its ability to separate itself into three fairly equal parts, giving the ship great tactical flexibility. The Trident is always fielded in wings of 3 which are part of larger battle groups (or 'defensive gatherings' to use Taurhai parlance) of 9 ships. Those battle groups are often assigned to the larger cruiser and battleship-sized units or as escorts to tarnsports and medical ships. Many enemy wings have been surprised by the Trident's ability; one moment they see 9 ships on their sensors and then instantly they find themselves surounded from all aspects by 27 ships (!)

The whole ship looks like a Romulan fishing tool called the Tor'Muta, often used by the fishermen on the Apnex sea on Romulus. This is how the class got its name among the Romulans.

The Truth-Seeker is the lightest vessel in the Taurhai fleet. It is often used as a light reconnaissance or courier ship. It has only limited tactical abilities and it should avoid fighting whenever it can. It is equipped with a very powerful sensor suit, making the Truth-Seeker very valuable. It also has the ability to land, which adds to its versatility.

Wow that's a nice series of writeups!

It's semantics, but I think I would have rated the HGB much higher and used less of them. As a comparison some of the more modern Romulan beam weapons are rated as a much higher penetration than a Type XII (I think it's 14, but I could be mixing my self up here)

As a race, from the LUG descriptions they were supposedly much more advanced than the Romulans.

With regards to weather the Scimitars super weapon could destroy them is moot as the Scimitar is floating space junk However, since the Romulans can be detected by them I am not sure if they could (or would be allowed) to get that close to their homeworld again! I think the Romulans are well aware that they don't want to 'wake the sleeping dragon' - as any retaliation atack from the Taurhai would be extremelly devastating - the Taurhai beat the Romulans, technologically, at every turn. Only the bombing of their homeworld had them back off into a truce.
