Awards

Hey,

I posted this on the Decipher forum and was wondering why is it that the the 2002 RPG Game of the Year Winner is related to a small announcement towards the bottom of the sidebar.

For a game that has won two major RPG industry awards this year, Decipher is really shortchanging it and themselves. Why is it not "front and center" on the main page?

Really is a great opportunity to get some positive press and attract new gamers, yet it still seems like the game is regarded as second-class (especially in contrast to the CCG).

It's like winning the Golden Globe and Oscar in one year, you would think someone in marketing would realize the potential it has to increase potential sales.

BTW I did send an email to Decipher regarding this issue, its not just a rant on my part.

I must emphatically agree with you here, vgunn.

I can't understand why Decipher isn't heralding their award on the front page, as nothing boosts sales more than attention.

Hopefully, perhaps they'll use honor this to greater promote the game, sell more copies, and consequently, devote more resources to more products down the line.

Glad to see we agree on something.

BTW (though you know I don't like the system or certain setting issues) I think what you, Ineti and other huge fans of this game are really adding to the content of it and its great to see. Really, so much additional resources that are written on a volunteer basis (at least I think so:) ) which are extremely well-done. Only wish Decipher would treat the RPG like y'all do.

Forgive my denseness, but what awards did they win? You know if they did what you suggested, I wouldn't have to ask.

The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game won best RPG at Origins. Here's Decipher's press release about it:

To find this, you have to go to the main page and scroll way down on the page, looking at those headlines on the left. It's about two screens down, depending on your resolution.

I also think that Decipher should try to use this award to increase their sales, but I am sceptical about the game really being the best one. As far as I know the only basis for selecting the winner is the number of online votes. I believe that any RPG based on a popular movie or series will atract more players, who, as long as the game doesn't have any major flaws, will vote for it. I don't know what other RPGs you were able to vote for, but I am sure that the producers of those games didn't have too high expectations after Decipher's application.
Don't misunderstand me, the LOTR RPG certainly is good, but the only way to find out if it is the best would have been by having an impartial jury.

But really thats water under the bridge. I felt the same way, IMO Buffy RPG is a superior system and Eden did a better job melding it with the setting (frankly I think it was the best game to come along in years). Also think Mutants and Masterminds was better. However LOTR RPG did win and that is saying something. Decipher should, as I said earlier, take advantage of winning two major awards and on the website it should be front and center, at least for a while.

Others up for best RPG were:

d20 Call of Cthulhu
Mutants and Masterminds RPG
Silver Age Sentinels
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

My guess is that the two superhero games cancelled each other out, d20 CoC is just too obscure, and Buffy was aimed at too narrow an audience (regardless of its high quality - and perhaps also the last couple of seasons might have tainted the RPG's ability to stand on its own).

I'm not sure what other award they won this year - and haven't stumbled across it anywhere.
