In my old group ST took up a very small percentage of game time, but there were a few. We used/use:
USS Endeavor (old FASA game, at least I think that was the ship)
USS Toronto (Prime Directive game)
USS Cerberus & USS Centaur (future forum game, I hope)
and of course
The Big E :D (again old Fasa game)
And that is over a period of about fifteen years.

Most gaming groups get most of their quotes from Monty Python. We get ours from the Princess Bride.

My group uses Python, Princess Bride and of course Buckaroo Banzai for quotes.
But there is another movie that holds a scared quotable place for us...

As for ship names, we have only one name that is a joke name. Stuck for something to do one game night, I had each player write down 5 words on a piece of paper. I took those words and then hadeach of them pick a number from 1 to 5 and with the 5 words that I ended with made an adventure.
One of the words was "billows". She's a creative writing major, what can you do.
So at a loss on how to use this word...I created the USS Billows. I have no idea if I even gave it a class or an NCC, but it was there to drop someone off :)
The last Trek game I ran (FASA, back in 90) was on the USS Long Beach (NCC-1714). I don't know why I chose Long Beach...it was before I had access to the Federation SRM, but I decided to name a series of Constitution-class heavy cruisers for cities around the Federation (again, I really can't remember how Long Beach came up...it's actually rather embarassing :rolleyes: ).
In my various pbem RPGs, we've used:
USS Mendel (Galaxy-class)
USS Monitor (Nebula-class, later Intrepid-class Monitor-A)
USS Ticonderoga (improved Galaxy-class, later Eagle-class [my own design])
USS Nelson (a Galaxy-like shuttle carrier called the Caesar-class)
USS Montana (Akira-class)
USS Ariane (Tsyklon-class surveyor [made up design])
I've always wanted to make a ship called the Bannockburn, maybe a Saber frigate or a Norway cruiser.
I also like to use non-Terran names a lot, especially since the series all seem to be devoid of them (to the point of being Earth-centric). I'd recommend pulling out your Andorian book and using the language section to make some inspiring names, or peruse the history section for Andorians of legend.

Other ideas are to use city names from the Planets of the UFP and the Vulcan sourcebooks:

Tyger, wasn't the Long Beach the first nuclear powered surface warship? Maybe that's where you got the name from.
Nope. The first nuke surface ship was the aircraft carrier Enterprise, the first nuclear cruiser was the Bainbridge, and the Navy built four more, named after states. (South Carolina was one, I remember...she used to be moored about halfway down the dock from us).Quote:

The Navy used city names for her Los Angeles-class nuclear hunter-killer submarines...of the 40-odd ships of that class, none were named Long Beach.
I think the only reason I called the ship the Long Beach was that the Navy had a base there (it was closed in the 90's). It's still embarassing...:rolleyes:
Bainbridge! That jogs my memory. Now I remember where I saw a picture of the Long Beach. It was in an old maritime history magazine, and it had an article about the "world's first all-nuclear task force". There was a picture of Enterprise, Bainbridge, and Long Beach in formation.
On another note, Indefatigable isn't just for Hornblower fans. That was a real RN razee frigate, and Captain Pellew was her real captain. CS Forester did some real research before he wrote the Hornblower stories.

Antoher good RN-style name came to mind... USS Indomitable.
My capaign is based on a refitted Intrepid class explorer, USS Marblehead... named after the birthplace of the Earth's United States Navy.
