Always...
I've gotten a lot of use of the Vagr (from Traveller) and the Yazirians (from Star Frontiers).
Upcoming adventures will feature the Sleestak (Land of the Lost) and, if I can figure it out the details, the Daleks.... :D
When the "To Boldy Go" netbook comes out (hint hint!) I'll be creating
Wizardry
Felpurr
Rawulf
Rattkin
T'rang
Dane
Helazoid
Mook
Munk
Umpani
Gorn
Masters of Orion
Bulrathi
Alkari
Sakkra
Darlok
Klackon
Meklar
Mrrshaan
Psiloid
Starflight
Thrynn
Elowan
Veloxi
Gazurtroid
Minstrels

Klingons, but without honour or brains. They're the one thing from Andromeda I don't like, although they've been retooled a bit for this season.
I've adapted a few things from other games - Vargr and Aslan from Traveller and the Yazirians (Dan and I think alike, I guess), as well as a Slarg from Fringeworthy. I've also used the H.R. Giger alien from Alien, but who hasn't? ;)
Um... Lucifer.
From a short short story entitled "Displaced Person" by an author whose name escapes me.
Really f'ed up the mind of my mythology-obsessed First Officer.
I am thinking of using the Delvians from Farscape, I like the plant race :)
Mind Flayers from DnD.
Those things scare me more than the Borg.
I believe that you are thinking of the Kodiak Pride whose abilities were engineered strictly for combat...Jump first, think later. I personally like the Sabor Jaguar Pride, engineered for intelligence as well as Brawn.Quote:

Each to his own.:)
BTW, in which ep does it say that the Klingons are intelligent? :D

Actually did that once in a DnD game. Had the players rolling in the aisle. Yes they are more scary than the Borg simply because they are a group mind with Psi powers.
THe Kzin have made an appearance as have the Lyrans (from SFB). Most of the SFB races actually exist in the game but they've yet to make an actual appearance.
Oh one PC had an encounter with a Treecat (Honor Harrington) but no one believes him :).
A pseudo-Gua'old race (adapted from Stargate SG-1) has also appeared.
*Waves happily at another Honor fan*. Good choice in literature dude :DQuote:

Funnily enough, I'm just in the process of ripping off some ideas from the Honorverse for my campaign. I'm also about to reintroduce an energy-based, Gua'old type species (only nastier) as well.
The atevi from C.J. CHerryh's foreigner universe books make excellent aliens for trek: ebony humanoids with gold eyes with no word for love, with a political/cultural system that would make machiavelli wince -- assassination is a respected avenue of political theatre, though one must first provide a notice of intent. The atevi homeworld possesses a small human enclave (stemming from pre-federation human colonial efforts, if being used in a trek campaign...) and stands testiment to why the Prime Directive, and protocols regarding first contact are so important. Human-atevi contact (the atevi were semi-industrial and mostly feudal at the time) led to a very nasty war and humans being exiled to a small island with contact limited to one...one human ambassador as the humans filter tech to the atevi which by the time of the novels makes them ready for space flight....
how the federation would deal with such a situation would make for an interesting episode, or even a short campaign. Make the atevi-humans warp capable (but just barely), they've achieved a kind of world government (and remember internal politics, even the rather nasty and violent atevi kind would qualify as an internal matter...), and the atevi are already "contaminated," or at the very least aware of other cultures and species....
Crossovers! :D :D Now you're talking!
I've always wanted to cross Trek over with various anime series. here's some ideas I've had:

Having a ship visit El Hazard would make a terrific exploration campaign. Pre-warp civilizations mixed with highly advanced ancient technology, ancient mysteries and displaced earthlings would generate countless ideas for a campaign.
The Jurai from Tenchi Muyo and the Raalgon from Tylor would make excellent aliens for a Trek campaign.
For a lighter campaign, I would have a crew encounter Galaxy Fraulien Yuna and friends (with the Captain and crew playing it straight. Imagine encountering a horde of techno-magical girls...
The pirate ship Sol Bianca would be a worthy antagonist for a starship crew.
Anime crossovers - great idea! If I hadn't planned to get one of my big story arc into high gear real soon (that just doesn't fit crossovers very well), I would use this at a moments notice!Quote:

Maybe after my players have dealt with Section 31. :D
And you are absolutely right about the Jurai and the Sol Bianca.
How about the aliens from Detonator Orgun? Humans with the single minded determination of the Borg and the technology to back it up should be a worthy adversary for any crew.
And the Zentraedi from Macross (aka Robotech) could be used as an ancient servitor race of the Iconians or T'kon.
Hmmm or a Zentraedi taken over by a Gua'old... talk about BIG problems. :D
Double post deleted. Stupid computer! :(
Err, Lancer...you're posting in stereo now? :D
More anime crossover goodies:

Magic Knight Rayearth: A Starship enters a dimensional rift to Cephiro. An excellent campaign setting.
Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas: good characters for a pirate cappaign.
Saber Marionette J: The idea of a lost all-male human colony could make for an intersting exploration campaign.
Cowboy Bebop: Easily transplanted into Trek with a little fine-tuning.
Nadesico: With a little work, the concept could be adapted to the Trek universe.
Like your ideas also, Lancer. :)
P.S. I would definitely recommend to Starfleet changing the uniform's style to those on the Nadesico anime (Trivia: the creator of Nadesico used ST:TNG as the inspiration for the uniforms in the anime.)
I have shamelessly taken ideas from various locations, B5, Farscape, Andromeada, SFB, FASA, do Trek novels also count?, nothing from Star Wars...yet.
I never really thought about DnD monsters, heck I have an article some place around that actually converts Illitheds, and Beholders in to Alternerity/Star Drive rules. I guess it just never clicked in my wee bone box... ;) hee hee
Oh here's a scarie thought, Thri-Kreen...or Dark Sun's Mul's the altimate hybred slave race...
Ghosty returns wave...:) yes just wish Webber would finish writing the next one. I enjoyed the Treecat solo adventure...and everyone still thinks the science officer was dreaming about a six legged tele-empathic cat. :)Quote:

I tap the Honorverse for interesting characters to flesh out NPCs. The newly appointed CINC of Starfleet is a fire breathing kick ass type based loosely on Hamish Alexander although there's a bit of Ivan Antonov (from the Starfire novels thrown in). As an in-joke the USS Fearless is commanded by a Captain Harrington :).
This one is new...I'm going to introduce a new SCE team nicknamed "Team Banzai" :):):)
Hey Ghosty :D
Well I must admit, the Honorverse NCOs are largely the basis for my take on Starfleet NCOs. Although we don't have any Steilmans amongst the Starfleet types ;)
I'm also finally going to cave in and use Starfleet ground forces, since the marine template from Weber's novels is just too good NOT to use.
Racewise, I'm about to introduce a distant human colony based on the Graysons.
If only I could figure out how to do ship to ship combat as good as Weber does.

Let's not forget Dr. Who!:D
I am surprised that so far no one has mentioned using any of the stuff from the Humanx universe. The did a GURPS version of that setting back in the late 80's which you can still find around at times though no reprintings so far that I know of. Many of the species and concepts would work well -- even better, put a different species in place of the Humans or perhaps parallelled evolutioned humans and have the Federation try to deal with the Commonwealth.
For something *really* different...use the Uplift War universe. Several ways to do so:
A) Have the galactics show up in the Milkyway Galaxy Alpha/Beta quadrent as it is to be opened up for new colonization and discover all these "Wolfling" species...species obviously seeded by a rogue Patron species that was "Soonering" the sector illegally. Of course the Galactics will feel justified in simply exterminating all these rogues and taking their planets...but perhaps they may be willing to offer patronage to those who are truly worthy.
B) Have a Federation Vessel "discover" Galactic civilization...probably by accident. Near Parallel Dimension, or Alternate Timeline, or side effect of attempts to use new Graviton Shunt Transwarp drive or whatever. Not only must The Feds be careful, in the second and third options, they have to be sure not to blow it for the entire Human Race.
GURPS Uplift still available also if you can track down a copy.
Peace
OH! One last "crossover" -- Starfleet as the Void Engineers of the Technocratic Union of Mage: The Ascension.
Will we see the Hong Kong cavaliers as well Ghosty? ;)
Can't wait for my DVD to arrive :)
I borrow (ie: steal) freely from Science Fiction novels I've read, or movies or other game systems, but I change the names of the aliens, and a few other salient details. :) Just so my folks can't say "Hey, that's a Dalek," and the whole Trek Universe supsension of disbelief block and tackle comes tumbling down.
If it's a novel, I try to use the author's name in some way as the name of the aliens, as a "tip of the hat," and later my players look at my bookcases and say, "Hey... the Viehl... those blue-skinned ClanFamily people with the retractable claws... this book by Viehl has a blue skinned guy on the cover - can I borrow it?"
:)
The big benefits of working in a bookstore. Limitless ideas to (steal) borrow.

Weber did give me good ideas about how to run NCOs although some of them were based on my own experiences in the armed forces.Quote:

Now that one I'd like to see. :)Quote:

Remember that Weber started as a wargame designer chief among them was Starfire (a lot of Honorverse tech comes from there) with quite detailed rules on space based combat so its obvious he's done a lot more deep thinking about the subject than most Trek writers. The problem is that Star Trek ships tend to be a bit more manuverable and they don't seemed to be bound by orbital mechanics as much as Honorverse ships. Intercepts are easy in Trek as opposed to the tortourious astronav calculations needed for an engagement in the Honorverse and you don't have the great variety of weapons and defensive systems which makes battles even more fun.Quote:

I plan on using him, the Master and the Daleks in Season 3 :)Quote:

It also strikes me that Weber was ex-military. His insights into the mindset of officers and NCOs seems the product of personal experience but I'm not sure.Quote:

On the subject of the Honorverse, I was thinking of having the PCs run into a vest pocket empire ruled by a constitutional monarchy with an able tradition bound navy preparing for war with a more powerful neighbour which is a sort of military dictatorship (like Napoleonic France of Bismark Germany) over a number of planets on their common border after a prolonged period of diplomatic manuvering. Now this little war is about to break out in the Federation's backyard.
Neither power is allied to the Federation although both have diplomatic relations with the Federation more to obtain Federation military tech than an interest in joining the Federation.
I had wondered if Weber was ex-military myself. His writing is very insightful, but of course, not having military experience myself, I can't say how realistic it is. But it feels right to me.
You snooze...you loose. :)Quote:
